Book: American Soldier - edited by Nate Hardcastle
I bought this book for Trevor as I was about to board the plane to Seattle. I'm not finished yet, but haven't been able to put it down when I do have time to read.
It's a collection of first-person stories by various members of our Special Forces units, from present to about 1969, but mainly 80's to present.
This is about a lot more than just the violence of war -- there's a lot of heart in the stories in this book.

I will have to look for hat book, it sounds fascinating.
I assume it gets past the mythology of the the "Snake Eaters" and examines the hearts of the men that choose the life of warrir/ammbasador

Yes, it totally does. I am so glad I got this book. I first heard about it on Talk Radio, and then there it was staring me in the face at the airport bookstore.
There's a LOT the US military has done to help struggling countries and countries with corrupt regimes that I just did not know about. The the human element, compassion, and such are so well-told in these stories.

Hey Shirley and Doug-
I'll have to check this out to see if the library has it.
Shirley, what you said about the book not having just the violence of war, but also the heart of the people who were in there and fighting. Shelby Foote, author of both Civil War fiction and non-fiction, speaks eloquently about that.
His book Shiloh was a good example of just what you said.
