That was fun, Bob!

Its mathematical. Take the example they give, 23, 2+3 = 5, 23-5 = 18. Now, look at the 18, remember the symbol, and click. Now try it again, making sure you note the symbol they use for 18 each time (it changes). I promise every time you will get the correct symbol. Once you are convinced, try another number. 99 for example. 9+9 = 18, 99-18 = 81. Look at the symbol for 81. Now look at the symbol on 18 (before you click), 18 and 81 will have the same symbol. Using their formula, you can only come up with certain numbers in the range they use. Thus, all these numbers that can be arrived at have the same symbol. They change it with every time you click the try again button to throw you off.

The answers you get are all always multiples of nine (in a base ten system): 10-1=9, 11-2=9, etc. If you look at the symbols for any multiple of nine, it will be the same symbol
(9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 99)
The symbols change, yes, but notice the nines all have the same new symbol. It's the only answer you can get because you are forced to choose a 2-digit number and when you subtract the sum of the two didits, your answer will always be a multiple of nine. That's because we use a base 10 system. If we were using base 9, our answers would always be multiples of 8.
My son, Trevor, provided me with this answer as soon as he saw the symbol chart. No, he hadn't seen this before, but has worked with bases and such a lot.

"It did not work when I just looked at a symbol, then the ball, then clicked."
Right, because the odds are against you that the random symbol you picked fell on one of the set values that have to ocur as a result of that equation. No matter what number you use, the number you use to pick the symbol will always be either 9, 11, 18, 22, 27, 30, 36, 45, 54, 69, 72, 81, or 94.

Hey Chris,
I just deleted my first post since it was not giving any info, just a question, and not realizing you were replying or I would have left it up.
I basically had tried it trial and error and wondered how it worked, then Trevor came along and instantly saw the base 10 relationship to two-digit number and subtracting the sum of the two digits. The answer, always being a multiple of nine, means that in order for this to work, the same symbol will always appear on every multiple of nine.
