Beached whales
I got this message today from my brother-in-law who lives at the NC Outer Banks.. I hadn't seen it in the news...
You may have seen on the news or in the papers today that yesterday, more than 30 pilot whales beached themselves just down the road at Coquina Beach. The beach is about 12 miles south of Nags Head. It's where we used to go most frequently. I've done a lot of fishing there.
*** The whales weigh about 4,000 pounds each and once beached, they die rather quickly, especially if they are injured coming ashore. Their*organs can't stand the weight of the bodies unsupported by the water.
*** Scientist rescue teams rushed to the beach. Seventeen of the whales were already dead. The*whales were discovered about 7:30 a.m. and by 10 the rescuers were there. Five more whales had to be euthanized. About ten were pushed back into the surf, but the scientist were not sure if they would live or not.
*** It is a mystery*as to*how and why they get beached. Last*year 27 of the pilot whales beached in Florida. Usually the pilot whales are off in much deeper water feeding on squid. The scientist are doing necropsies to try to find out what they can. Some of the larger whales will be buried there on the beach.
*** The pilot whales are on the endangered species list.
