Atkins diet....day 5
Well I am on day 5 of the ever popular Atkins diet. It has not been pretty, especially since I was a carbo junkie. I'm not that overweight, but I have a belly forming so I wanted to see if I could get rid of that, then maintain by reducing portions and being smart about what I eat. It kinda sucks because you cant even have fruit or anything (well very little of it anyways). My biggest cravings: Ice Cream, regular pop (diet isnt too bad though), and bread. I am also eating a lot less (due to lack of options), and really am not THAT hungry, which is good to know for when I go back on normal eating habits. I can definitely cut back my portions and still feel satisfied. I definitely think much of my snacking/eating was just for "something to do", not because I was hungry. I think I've dropped about 8 pounds in the 5 days, we'll see how it keeps up. Started at 219, want to end around 185-190. Of course when I told everyone at work I was on a diet and had them guess at how much I weighed, the 3 women I asked (they are who count!), said 185-190. DOH!

It ain't easy no matter how much or little you need to lose, so, good luck! As a lifelong diet failure, I've tried 'em all at least once, and, in my opinion, the Atkins is the easiest, cheapest, and tastiest of the lot. It's the only one I can stick to for any length of time any more, and I have found that if I stick to it at least 5 days of the week, I will usually lose a pound or two regardless of what kind of backsliding I do the other two days. For me at least, it has to be easy and convenient or I won't stay with it long. One of the tricks I have found to sticking with this diet is to have plenty of foods on hand that I can snack on that are unrestricted on the diet. I'll make up mock potatoe salad (using cauliflower instead of potatoes) coleslaw (using mayo, vinegar, equal) for vegetable side dishes, and, I cook off enough meat (brisket, pork roast, chicken or turkey) to last several days. Also, I used lettus and collard green leaves like bread to make 'sandwiches/burritos'. It takes some imagination and ingenuity, but, you can eat well and still lose the pounds.

Agreed with the "it has to be easy or I won't do it". I would be happy with a pound or 2 a week as well, so maybe once I get a little off I will change to that method. My biggest problem is the lack of options here at work. I did stock my fridge for home (you'd be amazed how good sugar free jello and whip cream is!), so I am good to go there. Once I got going with it, it hasn't been too bad.

OK no more Happy Meals..... that's right....instead order two double cheeseburgers-hold the ketchsup, dismantle, toss the bread to the grackles, then slap the beef around the veggies and enjoy! At work, your best bets from the vending machines are beef jerky (mind the added sugar carbs!), oily type nuts (such as pecans, macadamias, filberts), and pork rinds. Your best bet, of course, is to pack your own.
