Asbestos Tape
Some of you may have seen my thread about getting a new furnace. Well, as part of it, I've been looking at my duct work and have found what I believe to be asbestos tape at some of the joints. I live in an older house (built in 1926), so I don't know how long it's been there. I've been told before that if you completely contain it (i.e., duct tape over it), then it poses no threat. Is this true, or should I shell out the $$$ to have it professionally removed? TIA!
Paul.

I will usually just leave the stuff alone unless it's on a duct we're working on. We spray it down with a water bottle then just peel it off (wearing a dust mask).

Conventional thought says that if the asbestos if not deteriorating, and is in sound shape, DON'T touch it!! If it's flaking, or you see pilees of dust, don't blow them around or anything, you'll have to have it professionally removed. Pricey but safe.

So, would covering it with duct tape be a bad thing, even if it's in good condition?

I tend to agree with Lee, just leave it alone. The only time we hire professionals is if it's an old boiler that's covered in asbestos. The amount that is on your ducts isn't enough to worry about. Duct tape tends to lose it's adhesiveness after a few years so putting it on the asbestos could eventually cause it to come off.

Well crap-ola. I had already covered it with duct tape before I thought to post this thread. What should I do now? Leave it alone? Call in a professional? Move to a new house?
Thanks!
Paul.

I was what you call a "profesional" being certified in many hazardous waste removals, incuding asbestos. You will be fine by covering it with duct tape as long as you dont disturb it. If you are going to be disturbing it or are just worried about it, I wouldn't mind coming out and taking a look at it for you.
