I didn't know prismacolors could be used like that.
|
Shirley and all, thanks for the compliments Prismacolors are a really unique medium, I often hesitate to lump them in with colored pencils. Their color saturation is incredible... you can use them just as if you were painting, with far more control and precision.
Dick, she's definitely on her way if she keeps practicing her technique. If she's still interested, I think the best thing possible for learning artists is to take a figure drawing course during high school, maybe during the summer at a local arts college (many many scholarships are available for these courses, and usually the key is a recommending letter from a high school art instructor). Figure drawing is very important... it presents an opportunity to learn to work with the gestural quality of any piece, be it of people or boats, etc.
Best,
Chris

Hey Shirley, Anne-Marie, and Chris, thanks. I'm sorta proud of FishGirl. (as if anyone didn't know already ) Having supportive encouragement is a big plus, as it is for anyone in any endeavor.
Chris,
As you so obviously know, raw talent is fun but takes much development through learning techniques and practice. FishGirl, though only 9, has the benefit of a motivated art teacher at school as well as her mother, an artist and teacher in her own right, at home. Importantly, she does listen and wants to learn while at the same time just enjoys drawing, painting, etc., just for the fun of it!
Here's a colored pencil sketch she did on the back of a scrap piece of paper while tending the lion cub at the wildlife park last week.....I managed to save it from the trash heap!!!

Here's an oil pastel piece that FishGirl's mom did for a Cancer Society charity auction a few weeks ago. Very simple, yet powerful.

And lastly, an oil pastel FishGirl did for the school art competition this spring. All of it wouldn't fit on the scanner but this is about 90% of it.
I won't bore you with more, but I do enjoy showing their work.

Wow Fishgirl. Its great to see an inherent knowledge of how warm and cool colors work. Kids seem to have this perception of warm comes forward and cool comes back ingrained... it is unlearned by left-brain geared education systems... artists relearn it. Hopefully her keen perception never goes away, it is hard to grasp again. I promise, if she stays with it, her technical prowess is going to go through the ceiling. Wish her good luck for me!
Shirley, just to demonstrate the color saturation capabilities of Prismacolor's, here's the piece I'm working on now, notice the saturation of the blue in the background. If I wasn't familiar with the pencils, I'd swear up and down it was paint.

Wow! Chris! That's just so ALIVE!!
Do you exhibit and sell your work? Have you done sea turtles?
And I love Fishgirl's work, too! I love the feelings that Dipstick brings forth in his 9/11 Fireman, too!
We need a gallery here...
Thanks to all for sharing,
Shirley

Wow! Where have I been! Loved everyones work! The great thing about viewing art from lots of differant people is the incredible diversity. I tried to post some pics of my work, but, I can't figure out how to attach them. They are too big to post I think. I'll see if I can figure this out and post later.

Hey Shirley... Yeah I have exhibited my work locally for the past few years, but my means have disappeared, so it doesn't look like it will be happening anytime soon. I don't really sell anything either... I mean, i've sold a couple, but they were chance incidents.
Best,
Chris

oh yeah, no sea turtles either...
hmm... may have to fix that.
The bottom half of the dolphin piece may have to draw itself... I'm stuck again... can't figure out what other images to add.
Jerel... you jinxed me!

Chris, your work is really beautiful! I love color pencils as well, although oil is my fav media.
"....I have exhibited my work locally for the past few years, but my means have disappeared, so it doesn't look like it will be happening anytime soon. I don't really sell anything either... I mean, i've sold a couple, but they were chance incidents. "
I understand! I've tried for over 15yrs to make a business of my art, but, it seems the problem for me is not the quality of my paintings, but, my lack as a business person- I've always been painfully shy and introverted all my life and just can't seem to do what it takes to pull in commissions and get my work out where it will be seen and sold. What a waste my art degree was!
Ok, so maybe I don't act shy and introverted on line, it's that anonymity thang-you can't see me!
