Hehe reformating a drive and doing a fresh install isn't something to fear, it's like a breath of fresh air, kinda like spring cleaning =) This is also why I highly recommend having 2 hard drives, one for storage (pictures, movie files, install files, etc..) and one for programs and your OS. Honestly the largest most complex program on your PC is most likely the OS and when that gets F'ed up there is often no other fix then a reinstallation and a 2nd drive makes the process so much simpler. One more thing, if you bought an XP upgrade cd, you don't have to use it to upgrade, it can be used to do a regular installation.

Hmmmmm The RAM issue might play into it, that puter needs 768 megs RAM. I dont know, it needs to be dealt with professionally, its not mine, so I managed to get it booted up and into the login screen, so she can access AOL and check email. Thats as far as I am going with it.
As far as my puter 98 SE is fine for now, if I get new one no doubt it will have XP

768 is tons of ram more then enough to do most anything, anymore nowadays I recommend 512mb of ram more because of price then requirement, it's just so bleeding cheep now there is no reason to skimp on your ram. If you're skimping 256 is as low as I'd feel comfy with for xp, you'd get slow downs but it shouldn't crash you. Under that is where your problems are going to get bad.

Doug trust me, when you do finally upgrade you'll be happy with xp, when it's on a system that's good for it, it's very solid.

It's funny. My upgrade on this 'ol cow box went flawlessly. I went from '98SE to XP professional. The only complaint that I have is the amount of hard drive space used. But, then again, it was an upgrade and not a "clean" install. All in all, I'm very happy. And a really weird thing is my scanner didn't work worth crap with '98, but works awesome with XP. Go figger.......
