Any members live in Hawaii? Or recently

I have seen Spanky advertise a Keys apt for rent. Just wondering if there are any members that live on the Big Isle? I am looking at a job there. It would apear I am seriously qualified, but it is in Hawaii. All the rumors and such, thought I would try and talk to somebody that is there or has first hand knowledge.

I dont live there, in fact Ive never been there, but my mothers brother and sister live there with their families and have for a while. My sister is moving out there next week to work for them.

From what I know the cost of living issue is exaggerated, it is expensive to visit there but not as bad to live there. The living there is very casual, no-one drives expensive cars or lives in lavish houses. Its all about the beach.

I cant wait to visit next year!

I've been to Hawaii countless times, most recently twice this year. I am much more familiar with Oahu then the rest, but also Maui. Regarding employement: the economy is tough there as the Japanese down turn of the last few years has greatly effected the tourist industry on Hawaii (the mainstay of the Hawaiin economy). Of course, the US slowdown has also had an impact. So, unless you are into agriculture (pineapple, sugar cane, marijuana), it may be a tough time to establish yourself there. I recommend taking a recon vacation there and see for yourself specific to your own profession. Anyway, just my two cents. Let me know if you have specific questions with which I may be able to help. I can steer you toward some nice hotels, golf courses, diving, etc...

i was born & raised on oahu. what field are you going into? HI is definitely a place you wanna get job leads on before moving. there isn't much opportunity, but it's not too expensive to live there (i'm living in the bay area now)

like mapster said, few people live lavishly. it's mostly about getting through the day, spending time w/ your friends and family, and enjoying life. Big Island isn't very densely populated, there's a lot of country out there. but from what i remember, Hilo is one of the fastest growing cities in HI.
