Any horse tips? (and a new pet)

We picked up Dumas today. He is a big ol' gorgeous quarter horse.

I know as much about horses as Cynthia knows about cc'ing the head on a motor you are building for your dune buggy, which is pretty much nothing.

My riding experience is on jaded horses that follow the horse in front of them regardless of your input at national parks (think about those little cars they had 30 years ago at Disneyland and you will be on the right track).

This guy is huge and scary.

Not much into horses but one thing I remember from dating a horse rider was to never let the horse see/sense fear. They can sense the tenseness. Just be relaxed (as hard as it is sometimes) and normally the horse knows what to do more than you do. Then just take it easy and ride

Find a horse person close to you and become friends. A ten year old horse could come with baggage (just like us humans) and having someone you can call, ask or have over is invaluable while you learn.
The horse needs to know who the boss is or he will be. This is important. We used to board/train on my uncles ranch. I had a horse try and take me off of a cliff into the Clark Fork River onc. A thick stick reminded him of the pecking order.
Spend time with him, keep him in very good health and talk to him alot. If hes spooky about some things you can get him used to it through repectition around whatever it is. Blah blah blahm theres so much.
Best thing is to find someone you can trust to help you out and is local.

Cynthia & Dumas; a couple of beauties, Perry!

What do you know about the history of the horse, such as training, shows, etc.? A well-trained quarter horse is a joy to ride, just knee pressure and it will go wherever you want. My last one was a big ole chesnut like Dumas and as big as he was, he was just like a big puppy.

As I'm sure you're finding out, keeping a horse can be very expen$ive. Unlike the beemer, they still eat when you're not driving them.

Now that Cynthia has hers, when are you getting one for yourself so you can ride together?

Dick

She is boarding hers at her Maid of Honor's place, so it is basically close to nothing. Her friend Barb has four more horses so I am set to go riding. Cynthia is picking up something besides her English saddle for me to ride in.

Her friend is excellent with horses and Cynthia spent years and years with them. I am the only one that needs to come up to speed, but have excellent teachers.

Congrats on the horse Perry. It is good that her maid of honor is a "horse" person that should help you a lot.

I am very curious as to the horses name though and the proper pronunciation of it. Is it Doomas or Dumb a**? I suppose it could switch from one to the other as the need arises based on the personality of the horse.

Rule #1:

No matter how gentle the horse or how long you've known him, never walk behind him.

Dumas refers to the author who wrote a bunch of books such as the Count of Monte Cristo. The horse has some goofy registered name too. We'll work that out when they do the transfer with the brand id guy. There is a law here to minimize rustling that the owner, the buyer and the brand id people all have to witness the transaction and do the paperwork.

I am not sure if this law cut down on rustling or not. There hasn't been a hanging for a while though.

Doom-ah

Congrats Perry that is a beautiful Horse, remind me to wear boots and hat if I ever get out that way Oh and Tell the lovely Cynthia that the term "Cowboy" was actually coined by the Irish. In the west they were Vaqueros or Cabelleros,if you notice a lot of the old cowboy talk and equipment shows very heavy Spanish influence .
