Any Geocachers Here?

I've got another addiction... geocaching. Started in September and I'm hooked.

Wondered if any other reefkeeping addicts also had a second vice?

Ummm yeah - and it's cheaper than a reef tank

It's a fun way to get out with the kids (or alone, or with a group) and get some exercise...

Just wondered if anybody else here had given it a try.

There are a couple of caches within a few blocks of my house. Might have to give this a try.

I went to a Geocaching event last weekend - a breakfast. I couldn't stay to go caching afterwards, but plenty of folks did.

One of my customers showed me about the game - in fact there's a cache at my store (outside). It's fun to watch people looking for it and trying to be stealthy I've "busted" a few of them!

Some of the really cool ones I've heard of involve scuba or mountain climbing in a remote place. Those really sound like fun.

Yeah I've seen a few extreme caches listed. There are some that are as simple as lifting up the base of a light pole (they call those "skirt lifters" LOL!).

I am not big on the urban micro caches (skirt lifters) - but I do like ones in parks where some cross country trecking and doing battle with briars is involved.

There's one in Mexico right near where my Mom stays for the winter - had hoped to get it this year - but didn't get away this year. Hopefully next year - THAT one is a major hike.

We went geocaching today. I had to take care of a customer in Woodstock, took the kids with me and there were 3 we wanted to find not far from his house. First he brought us back to his work (at a country club) and bought us lunch!! He's the manager there - sent us a nice waiter and we had a great lunch and watched people taking "gimmes" on the 18th green! Then we went in search of our treasure.

We looked for the first one in a park for over an hour and still came up empty handed. The second one was in a tree beside a parking lot and there were people loitering about (aka "geomuggles") so we left that one and came to a third one in a magnetic key box on a guardrail. Went back to the second one - the loiterers were gone, it was wedged in a tree, so we were 2 out of 3 for the day.

We also practice "CITO" - Cache in, Trash out" - we carry plastic bags and pick up trash in the parks where we geocache - man it's amazing the litter some people leave behind. Here's a pic of James doing his CITO - he's also using this as part of his community service project social studies, and there's a photo of a view from one of the cache sites.

oops!!!!!!!!!!!

STERLING – The Greeley bomb squad was called to a bank on Thursday after a suspicious object was found in a bush.

Sterling Police say they got a call just after noon that a suspicious person was in the bank's parking lot. When officers arrived, the person was gone, but they found the object.

Police say it looked like an ammo case so they called the bomb squad.

Roads in the area were shut down, as were sidewalks.

Just before 6 p.m., the bomb squad detonated the object.

Police now believe it was a canister used for a GPS scavenger hunt game. People place objects in different locations and then send out GPS coordinates via the Internet.
