another computer problem
okay had a power outage a little while ago..
was onthe computer and looking up some PDF's i have saved ona CDRW. it was in the middle of opening on when the power went out.
now everytime i insert the cd the auto play comes up and nothing happens and the drive is going crazy, i have tried to cancel the auto play but get no response, tried to open the cd via my computer... can get the name up of the cd but that is about it. then it freezes up, if i do an end task .. i get explorer is non responsive and my whole screen goes blank..
is the cd screwed for good?i have a ton of PDF's onthe cd i woudl hate to lose. it took me a long while to put them on it...
oh.. i have no problem if i put in any other cd at all!

The CD is fine unless you were writing to it at the time of the power outage.
question, does the cd rom rev up and down multiple times? Also, what OS are you running? just like your tank, give me all the stats you can.

okay here goes
OS is XP home
the green light on it goes crazy blinking
not sure what else ya need?
no matter what i have tried nothing happens, i tried letting the auto play go go thinking since there is a lot of stuff on the cd about 500 mb of PDF's that it woudl take a while, but that did nothing, tried opening thru my computer.. got as far as the name on the cd.. then that did nothing....

Do you have another CD player you can try it on?

Go to stat, click run, type D:/ then click browse. You should see everything on the disk.

It sounds to me like your cd-rom might be blown. when they spped up and slow down like that it usually means they're shot.

I have lost a few to power spikes and such. there is a clutch in cd-roms that controlls the speed of the spinner. when it goes out the disk will spin up and slow down as the rom tries to control the speed.

You need a CD ROM data recovery program, there are plenty available on the net, check out C|Net for some sharewre sources, and although I don't recommend these particular ones below, they give you an idea of what you're looking for. At worst, you might loose one or two of the files using these programs to mine the rest of the data off the CD or DVD. Many DVD burners now have the software to recover data with the driver software, and I THINK the new Nero-7 does as well.
Check these out that came up on a broadcast search, again I don't even know these particular ones, but they usually are easy enough to find:

Tim I have an extra CD-RW drive. It is a TDK midnight veloCD model 4810b 48x if you need one new in the box. Let me know if you want me to ship it over.

AMEN! everyone with a computer should own one. $50-60 at most office supply stores. they also come with software that will save your stuff and shut your system down for long outages.
