advice for the new LFS employee (me)

well i was asked by the LFS owner which I shop at if I were still looking for part time work. I thought about it (I like this lfs, they are service oriented and honest and knowledgeable for the most part) and said, sure. so he hired me. am i going to get into waaay too much trouble now that I am working in my passion? am i going to go broke spending it on all the cool stuff that comes in every week?

and another aspect, being that i am going to be on the other side of the fence, does anyone have any advice on how I should conduct myself so as to be loyal to the LFS and yet still 'look out' (as in take care of the best interests) of the customer? does anyone else here work for a LFS and have any words of advice or cool stories? thanks!

Well , as a previous LFS employee/part-owner,,,
can you get into trouble? YUP !LOL
perks like discounts etc, are always nice,,,
Remember , you are working for the owner,,you want to sell what they carry, not tell people"go online/go here ,cuz so n so has LR/Fish/ equiptment cheaper"
Know the drygoods the shop carries, you'll be the one people come to that want to buy,,,,and tell em why they might want" this over that" for their applications.
It's tough now a days for a LFS to compete w/online and chains for best pricing, so ya gotta give the customer service thing.
people will buy from a shop that has prices a lil more than the cheapest, if the service/advice is good,,,
If you do not know something-find out.that's how you learn

very important: find out the whole deal on a customer's tank/experience. you'd be surprised how many people want to put neons with oscars,or lions with chromis,
ie: how long the tanks been up
what size
how many fish in it already,,
you get the point

bottom line- treat people like you want to be treated,,,

did i mention the discounts too? LOL
good luck!

it is easier to sell the stuff you know a lot about. if you can, see if you can help in the livestock picking. put your knowledge of what makes it to what does not into the mix. it will be easier to sell stuff that you have confidence in the fact that it will likely live for extended periods of time.

get to know the customers and their tanks.
