South Florida Mantis

I just recently cought a mantis shrimp while snorkeling in Miami. I snorkel quite a bit but had never seen one. I was looking at buying one for quite some time when I found this one. I beleive him to be a pseudosquillia ciliata. But I am not 100% sure. He is now in a smaller glass aquarium with about 5 inches of sand and some rocks that he digs burrows under. He has eatin a few peppermint shrimps and a damsel so far, all on purpose. A friend was mad at his peppermints. But thats a different story. So my question is, I have noticed that the mantis is carrying around something. There is nothing in his tank other than sand and bigger pieces of rock so I am confused as to what it could be. It looks like something with sand stuck to it, and he does not let it go. It looks jelly like but apparently sticky enough to sttract sand to it. Could it be eggs or some type of secretion? I am too new of a member to post pics or else I would. Any help would be appreciated.
