want to buy or rent or borrow

diamond drill bit for glass aquarium. Want to get away from noisy, leaky, algae collecting syphon boxes. I have no experience with drilling glass, but I've heard it's pretty easy if you go slow. I'm asking for tips, hints and drill bits to acquire, thanks in advance, Ken

Im hacking into a 20 right now for an external overflow. Looked at Home Depot for the bits and they discontinued the two bit set, only carry a taper bit which will not work well IMO. Sears had the two bit set, ball tip and bullet, by Craftsman for six bucks. I have been trying to get started for two weeks now after getting another tank and the bits but time is not on my side.

Good luck

I don't think tile bits are the way to go. Get diamond tip bits. The ceramic ones say "Not for Glass".

Almost forgot, If you just want a circular hole for a standpipe then check with Woody at the Seahorse. I believe he said $15 a hole which isn't bad if you dont have a dremmel and the bits.

I appreciate that info, I would have to dig all the sand out, then haul it down the stairs, it sounds tiring. And there's this; if I bust this 55, I guess I'll HAVE to buy that 100 plus I want. Because I'm just the kind of person who has to try, I gotta try. I'll stop by Sears, thanks whoever left that tip, I appreciate it. I was guessing alot more reef junkies had tried drilling their tanks and that I could borrow a set. But it looks like undrilled glass tanks are either unwanted or will not be drilled anytime in this lifetime.

So what size hole for what size plumbing does anyone suggest ? I have the parts from my old CPR syphon box, the thru walls, so they're an inch plus ? Use these ?

I had the local concrete cutters use a diamond tipped core drill for me.

harbor freight sells a bunch of bits for cheap, try giving them a call, i think it was like 10 bucks for a half dozen or something.

My family is in the glass biz and Ive built a few doozies myself but if your in need of a hole you can look in the phone book for any mirror or glass company and for 10-20 they will drill the holes for you 1-4" they use diamond tip bits or if you dont want the hassell of taking your tank to them they will generally come to you for a service call fee but either way you will have to completely clean out the tank as they use anti-freeze as coolant while drilling this is unavoidable as the temperature from the friction would break the glass otherwise. If i can be of any assistance let me know

I understand that just water can be used as a coolant ? true or false ? I've read that going slow with lots of water works. I don't want to haul the tank anywhere to be drilled, and I doubt I'd pay what someone would charge me to come to my house especially if they use antifreeze sinc I'd have to take the whole thing down anyway. But will water work as coolant ?
