Looks like that octopus skimmer comes with its own needle wheel pump that sits in the sump with the skimmer. Problem is the footprint on the webpage is just bigger then the space in my sump.

Yeah that would be an issue My nieghbor has one and it rocks! The NW110 may fit better, although I like the 8" diameter of the 200(more CFM, air in the skimmer, for longer duration=better skimming). The RC models may be what you are looking for but as you can see, finding an external skimmer seems to increase the price on all skimmers

I dont want a external skimmer. It needs to be in sump. What are the RC models you mention?

Those are the DNW(I think if I recall correctly) octopus skimmers. But their foot prints are larger. RC=recirculating. What is the maximum size you can fit in your sump? That will help be brainstorm possibilities for you

It looks like the Octopus NW150 will just fit in that space It has the 6" body and decent height and if I quickly added in my head right, the neck size would support the meshmod later down the road if you find that the skimmer is not keeping up, but my guess is that unless you are going to be running a really high bio-load you would be good.
I would also add the gate valve mod to this just to make fine tuning an easy affair rather than a time consuming chore

HNG has one of the octopus skimmers and talks about it all the time, I think he i in the midst of doing the mesh modification, you might try PM'ing him on the topic.
I am still a big fan on the MRC skimmer for larger systems for high eff. skimming at a reasonable price. I cannot justify pending the bux for a Deltec or similar super skimmer, I have enough trouble talking Mel into spending the coin for one of the big MRC beckett venturi skimmers and accociated support equipment (pressure pumps and the like)... $$$$.$$
If you have a fountain supply or pool supply place nearby, many of them sell the beckett venturi separately for these apps, and at one time BLowes sold the Beckett brand venturi outside where their garden pool supplies were sold, you might want to check these places out.

I really have no idea how to build one of these. I will message HNG about his skimmer to see how he likes it.
Thanks
What about the corallife needle wheel skimmers? Are the octopus skimmers OZONE safe do you know? I wonder if the octopus skimmers have ports to hook up your Kalk and Cal reactor efluent?

Octopus are made from cellcast acrylic so they are ozone safe... Coralife, not so much... But keep in mind ozone takes some planning to ensure the safety of you and the tank
No "hook ups" but for an insump skimmer, you just run the effluent drip into the section with the skimmer.
Keep in mind there are a few things that make a skimmer work. The amount of air going into the skimmer (SCFM or LPM), contact time (the duration each bubble is in the skimmer) which coralates to the cubic space available in the skimmer and flow through. Then an appropriate sized neck for the amount of SCFM etc. All this relates to the removal of DOC (crap ). Some complex DOCs take over 2 minutes of contact time to be removed, or so a study I read said. So in short, most skimmers under 4' tall are relying heavy on the SCFM part to achieve decent skimability. This is why becketts are good for removing DOCs, but have problems with the flowthrough/duration areas due to size. MRC did a nice job increasing this with the RC becketts... Now make a 12" diameter, recirculating beckett, 4' tall that is a direct cost comparison/operationally and you would likely have my business

Nah... MRC has the better injector and better quality and you know they will be around for years to come if there are any issues, or you want to add a second beckett and a 12" riser later. Well worth the extra few dollars IMO.

I was going to post pics of some various skimmers I've owned, but I can't do it in this forum...
