Quarantine System

My new Q systen is a total failure...at least in the summer. I used a hang on external power filter with the pump still attached and running for flow. Good idea except the pump's motor heated up the water to 84 degrees even in an air conditioned room.

I am now considering using specimen containers with airstones hung inside my frag tank to keep the temperature down or using the external hang on filter without the pump running but instead an airstone.

I think a QT would be a good idea when i get my new tank going. Dont want anything to big. Would 10g be enough for a QT?

Q

10 gallons is more than enough. I think I am going to set up an Eclipse 3 gallon tank as a QT. I already have it laying around so all I would need is CF lights and maybe one of those thermoelectric chillers.

Filtration is another issue. I may end up putting some live rock and sand in the Q tank as well. Maybe a small protein skimmer as well...

If you have to dose something harsh like copper or another lasting chem wont Rock and Sand get in the way? I do agree that what ever is in you QT would like the more natural setting...

Qt

Won't be dosing copper since this will be for corals only. I have another system for fish.
I may be treating for red bugs in this QT with Interceptor though.

I'm thinking I can always reseed the QT with rock or sand from my main system.

Dose anyone know if those small thermoelectric chillers (probe type) work? Or should I bite the bullet and get a small conventional chiller. The other option is to try a heat exchanger by running a small pump that takes water from the QT and pumps it out into a vinyl tubing coil in my sump then back to the QT. Might actually try this since I would not need much/efficient cooling capacity for a 3 gallon QT. The PC lamps should help as well as opposed to placing the QT under my frag tank MH bulb, as I now do. Isn't there a DIY PC retro for the small Eclipse tanks posted somewhere?

I think the sixe of the QT depends on what you are going to put in it. I would never quarentine a tang or larger angel or wrasse in a 10 gallon tank. It is great for small or inactive fish or for corals though.
