Penn-Plax Pro-Carb

After using Penn-Plax Pro-Carb activated carbon, I believe it is the best carbon I have used to this point. The Pro-Carb comes in pellets that do not break up and get into your system water. Also, when I wash it out prior to use, no black water leaches from it after a few rinses and the "crackling" sound is much louder and active than other brands....I assume this means it works better?

This stuff is hard to find though. I regularly buy it at PJs, but last night there was none left so I ordered some online.....much cheaper even with the shipping charge it is around 50% of the price. PJ's sometimes has it but not always and most of the time it is the small 28 oz bottles instead of the 57 oz bottles.

Anyway, I had been using it on my QT for a while and had absolutely clear water with no algae. After 3 days of using another product, the water is noticeably less clear and algae is beginning to grow. Even after washing it over and over, I could not get the water to run clear from it. Also, little bits of carbon were released into the water....no big deal but unsightly. I guess the old adages are true: "Stick with what works" and "If it ain't broke...don't fix it".

Update

The carbon mentioned above is no longer available at the link (store) cited in my post above.

I just placed an order for Kent Reef Carbon with Drs. Foster and Smith. The Kent carbon looks similar, but I'll have to wait and see how it performs relative to the Penn-Plax.

I've been using this stuff and seems pretty good. Snap crackel and pop when I rinse it and best of all very little dust
