My brain
No not MY brain but the one in my tank! SO we talked about it not looking sooo hot! I will try to get pics up soon but here is the problem. It has not opened in days now. Last water change before I saw an issue was Saturday the 9th did another one today! About 10-15 gal each time total system volume is 45gal. I am running a aqua c urchin. My lighting is T5. My paramas are as follows- results are from 2/11 and 2/16
Temp 78.7/78.0, SG- 1.025/1.026, pH-8.0/8.2, Nitrate-not tested/10, alk-9.8dkh/11.2, ammo-not tested/0.0, ca-525/300, phos-0.4/0.4, nitrite-not tested/0.0. I should test magnesium but have not yet. After results on 2/11 I dosed B- ionic 10 mL each. The next day or so later I started noticing that the brain weas not opening and some mushrooms were not as big either, they have since bounced back. What should I do. I am going to change my carbon out tonight and see if maybe it is chemical warfare?? Any other thoughts. Also I noticed some tissue recession on one edge very small but still there- it appears that some fire worms were living in that area. TIA Nicole

Nicole, you started the 2 part because you had readings of 9.8 dkh and 525 ppm calcium? I am wondering how they went from being that high (alk is good calcium is on the high side) to your alk going to 11 and calcium dropping to 300. It would be interesting to see what your mag is at. Did you notice any percipitation in the display after dosing at all?

Brain
Not sure if this is the problem, but I noticed that when I ran carbon or anything else that allows better light penetration, some of my corals closed up or even bleached from the higher incident light on the colony. did you just recently start running carbon? If so then maybe the increased light is causing problems?
I also noticed that your phosphate level is very high. Not sure if that would cause the problem with the brain though.

No precipitaion has been noted. I am going to be running sea gel for carbon and phosphate and I will test my mag and paramas again as we did a water change the other day. I will do this later when I am feeling a little better as I am home sick today. Thanks eveyone.

I had always ran carbon as I know that softies can cause chemical warfare I thought more carbon the better! I recently changed the carbon over though.

I retested my water today:
SG-1.026, pH-8.2, Ca-425, alk-8.4, Nitrate-0, Nitrite-0, Ammonia-0, mg- 1480, PO4-0.4. All other corals look great if not better than a few days ago, all fish are doing great as well. I moved the brain over into the far right corner last night. I have target fed it every night and it still has not opened up. Any other thoughts????? Thanks Nicole

Do you have any overhangs that you can place it under so it is shaded? Red open brains do not appreciate a lot of light. Mine always looked deflated and lost some color when it got direct light from my halides. It was happiest when completely shaded under a shelf, but still had some good flow.
