Has Anyone Used Lugol's

I was looking for something to to add some iodine into my reef system. Someone mentioned lugol's. Has any anyone used this product? How were its effects? I would be using as a direct drop into my system. It calls for 1 drop every 25 gallons but not to overdose. I was thinking of only doing 1-2 drops per week on my 65 gallon.

Hey Rob..

Foundmyway to the forum.. Nice place ..

But anyhow ...If your thinking of dowsing.. try to figure out your evap loss per week, add you iodine to your evap rate and drip it in ... You won't overdose that way, + never have to top off ...

on my 125 gallon I was loosing 2 gallons a day win evap. mixed my calcium and dripped it in .. I needed a drip every 3-4 seconds to make up for a 2 gallon a day loss... (I just mixed 5 gallons at a time)

Glad you made it over here, you will like it. I usually use 2-3 gallons per week. Lugols states one drop every 25 gallons, but not to overdose. I was thinking of adding just one drop a week.

P.S. Make sure you post in the members thread so we can get you on the list and also get you some access to the private forum.

you can add 1 drop of Lugols to a cup of tank water, stir it up and pour the cup of water into the tank. That will prevent localized overdose.

I just use the Kent Iodine...but I only use it a couple of days a month.....the lps and bta seem to like it. I'm sure I can do a better job in using it but I like to keep add in's to a min.

I have been adding lugols iodine at 3 drop per day. The colors in the SPS hae changed the are all much brighter. This is straight from the pharmacy not diluted.

Why do you want to dose iodine? I am unaware of any solid evidence that says that it is benificial. Then the issue of not overdosing. Iodine suppliments are difficult if not impossible to measure in the tank with aquarium test kits. Once added, Iodine in solution can also become Iodide and Iodate. There are no test kits I know of that measure more than one form. I am a firm believer in not dosing anything without a valid reason to want to do so. Just curious what your reason is?

I can see this side. I also have seen soft coral mostly do much better when I dosed Iodine. However I didn't notice a change in my sps. I only ever did 1/2 of the amount the instructions said too becasue I could not test the iodine level
