Ferric Oxide Phosphate Adsorbers

I read somewhere that using steel wool made of iron or any iron object could be used to do the samething as RowaPhos which is a Ferric Oxide phosphate reducer. The theory is that the iron is placed in the sump where it rusts, thus creating Fe02 which removes phosphate. Some people have reported that they use nails! Does this really work? Is it safe? Has anyone tried this?

hmmm I just found a old rusty razor blade in my sump....maybe I was helping my tank this entire time!
