Recap from NIMAS meeting

Our NIMAS group had a meeting this past Sunday at Dave's (aka Grallster) house. It had originally been slated to happen at Tony's (aka Tasher80) house but it got nearly cancelled due to Tony's wife delivering a baby (Ryliee). Dave came through with offering to host in the eleventh hour.

I distributed the most frags I ever had during the meeting.
2 of the blue centered zoas
3 of 1-900 zoas
1 of eagle eye zoas
1 of gorilla nipples
2 purple digis
3 bags of xenia
1 of green monti cap
1 mini BTA
1 green BTA - after meeting
1 yellow tang - before meeting

I received:
an orange monti cap from Eric (Digitalis) before meeting
red millipora from Dave
green nepthea from Chris
branching hammer from Angie's brother

There was quite a few people in attendence too!
Jeff (Junkzoo), Dave (Grallster), Brett (Parasite), Brett (Sand $), Todd (1-900-reef), Angie (GoingPoor), Angie's brother, Scott (aquagrizzly), Chris (ckusnierek), and myself (Bklynmet)

I connected the 20g to the 75g this past weekend - with Jenny's help. The heaters all went out and needed to get replaced in short order. I got two 150W Ebo Jagers. I also replaced the T5 bulbs.

I got a Hydor Koralia last week - part of Sal's Christmas present to me. It puts out good flow - not as much as the midded MJ but good. Here is my comparison of the three circulation pumps I have. This made the green bta want to move around to finda a happy spot and it wound up was stinnging the blue ridge helipora.. so I moved the blue ridge heliopora... and in the process, got a small frag for it..

New sump project is being planned.

Updated photos of the tank are here.

Office Nano update.

Visit to Tasher80's

Visited Tony's today to pickup the 50g Rubbermaid stock tub. While there I got to see his beautiful tank and fish room. I got some great ideas for a future setup by seeing his.

I was pleasantly surprised by an offer from Tony to take some frags - though they shouldn't be called frags because they're huge - home with me. The corals include:

+pink birdnest - my favorite 'sps' coral

blue milli

green polyped acro (unknown species)

unknown acro - it's the coral to the right in this photo.

The 1.5 hour drive back home went by quickly as I tried to think where these corals would go! I got them temperature acclimated, did an iodine dip, and in the 75g they went - most on the eggcrate shelf with the birdnest on the rocks - non mounted yet. To my pleasant surprise, I got polyp extension from all the corals - except the unknown acro probably because they come out with lights out? - within a half hour! Awesome!

The stock tank had two holes drilled in them through the bottom so I need to rework what I was thinking for plumbing, but it should still work out pretty well. I'm going to need to clean the dried coralline off before I fill with water. I'll post the updates in the build thread for the sump after I work on it.

Here are the first photos of the new additions from today's MMMC swap and subsequent trip to Preuss in Lansing Michigan...

Excuse the spots on the glass. The eggcrate is against the glass and some corals are in the way of the magnet cleaner from doing it's job...

Bali slimer - sliming away... Got from Marine Habitats

Blue acro. Tort? Got from Marine Habitats. Polyps came out about 1/2 hour after photo taken.

New mandarin fish. Got from Preuss. He started picking for food inthe rockwork about an hour or so after being introduced into the tank.

Zoas after the dip. I got this from LG-Blenny (Phil)

Zoas opened up a 5 minutes later.

The Brain. I got this also from LG-Blenny

Jenny accompanied me to this swap - it was her first. She okayed all the corals before me pulling the trigger on them.

General Update

Not much to update except that I cut the propogation tray that was in the 75g in half because it was taking up too much room and I'll have a good number of the frags on it given out Wednesday to a fellow reefer. I took the time to do some minor aquascaping - placing some corals in new spots. I've realized that I probably should not add many more new corals as I've run out of room to put them until I re aquascape.

The sun corals are looking better and better every day ad the direct feeding appears to be working at restoring them to their formal glory.

All the SPS are doing fantastic and are showing growth!

Re: the 20g. I siphoned out some cyano last week and I'll need to do it again this week. I do not want to go the chemi clean route as I have a mandarin fish that relies on pod population. I'll try doing a mandarin diner - as described in melevsreef.com - and see if I can get him to eat prepared foods. If so, I might then consider doing chemi clean as I'm sure that will eradicate the cyano from there. But I'm glad it is not in the 75g!

Oh, before I forget, I basted three aiptaisias that were growing in the 75g with concentrated kalk solution. I may have to re-hit one of them. That's all for now.

Wednesday 3/12/08, I bought the last fish that I'll add for a while. It was a Lawnmower Blenny. I'm getting close to being overstocked so I do not want to push it farther. I'll post photos when I get a chance.
