Working with aluminum tubes

Does anyone have experience working with aluminum tubes, primarily for building a lighting frame for the tank?

I just purchased new MH ballasts, bulbs and am deciding now on the reflectors. I want to mount the MH lighting in an aluminum frame to replace the canopy top and possibly add LEDs for moon lights and at a later date, 2 or 3 T5s if they will fit.

Should the connection points be soldered or riveted? Can I get the aluminum square tubes local? Is this something I should consider having a local company build for me or is it a possible DIY?
