Who Keeps Shrimps?
Just trying to get some convo going in the new forum..
Well most of us keep snails, and crabs in our tanks to help keep it clean but who keeps shrimps and what kinds and how many? I have found that my 3 skunk cleaners keep a good house and also clean the fish from time to time. There are many kinds of shrimps availabe to us such as the coral banded shrimp, camel shrimps, blood shrimps and so on

Most of the shrimp I have kept in the past only became active at night. Next weekend I am going to rearrange my tank and I was thinking about a cleaner shrimp then. Which ones do you recommend?

Mike, The Skunk Cleaners are the best at cleaning and are the most active and visable. Blood shrimp are nicer to look at but are not as good at cleaning and hide alot. Some say if you have 4-5 of them they become more active. I only have one.
I also have 2 pistol shrimp. I like them all.

The skunk cleaners are a great addition to almost any tank and a much better alternative to a cleaner wrasse. I have one cleaner shrimp and one clown anemone shrimp. I can stick my hand in the tank next to the cleaner and after a few seconds it will hop on and try to clean me. Very cool little critter. I definitely recommend one.

Skunk cleaners are really great. They have awesome personalities. Just do not make the fatal mistake of putting a coral banded in with skunk cleaner or probably any other shrimp. My coral banded murdered my poor little skunk. I was told that it was okay to keep them together, but it didn't work out well for me. Not saying that it can't, but my observations showed me that the coral banded was really aggressive

I agree with the recommendations for the cleaner shrimp. Very cool tank inhabitant. Mine is not really active during the day, but he is visible since he always hangs out underneath my Seio pump.
I have 2 peppermint shrimp, also. They generally only come out at night, but they will crawl up my arm like the cleaner shrimp if I put my hand down in the rockwork next to them.

I have a 75 gal reef with 2 skunk cleaners, 2 blood shrimp and 2 or 3? peppermint shrimp. The skunks do majority of cleaning, peppermints take care of anthia(sp?) anmenonies and blood shrimp are for show only.
