But what's the problem there? You don't have to run them on a timer if the flow is the issue.
If the period is the issue, even if you have a period of 60 seconds, you still have the 1200 gph, just at a 60 second interval.

ya but who has ever heard of 15 minute waves? you have a wave coming from one direction then another coming from the other direction 15 minutes later. They seems like good pumps, just bad for making wave effects.

True, but personally I am not looking for waves. The wavebox is marketed for that. I am simply looking for a flow pattern that changes. I'm not sure that that is any less effective than a true wave simulation.
In my situation, $200 for an alternating flow pattern with a reduced "powerhead footprint" is ideal. Considering price, power consumption, size, convenience, and perceived reliability, I don't think there are any comparable alternatives.

IMO, It's the disruptive wave/flow action that's more important, not just the direction or amount of wave/flow by itself. Like S10 said, he's looking for a changing pattern, which in turn makes it disruptive. In the ocean you have conflicting currents, ever changing currents & surges. When waves crash into a reef, it disperses in many directions

thats exactly why i want to run an oceans motions 4 way on a closed loop. the tunze nanos do seem like very nice pumps though. If i wasn't going to run a closed loop they would probably be my powerhead of choice.
