i would think it would be lighter than regular glass because it is low on iron. i think the reason he says the tank is heavier is because the glass has to be thicker because its weaker. Correct me if im wrong because im just guessing.

180 gallon AGA tanks are 1/2" glass. A 180 Starfire would also be 1/2" since that is the maximum thickness that PPG currently makes Starfire glass.
Are you sure it is not Diamante?

I personally know the person that Teach got the tank from. It's a CUSTOM BUILT STARFIRE 180. I know this for a fact.

Also, the overflows are made of glass. All the bracing is made of glass, no plastic. I'm pretty sure it's made of 5/8".

Gotta be half inch or less. There is no Starfire thicker than 1/2".
http://www.duncanglass.com/horiageru...re_glass_.html
Two types of "clear" glass, are available. Ordinary emerald green tinted glass and Starfire, manufactured by PPG, for 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" thick applications and Diamante, manufactured by St. Gobain, for 3/4" thick applications. Both Starfire and Diamante are considered to be "optically clear". When looking through a piece of optically clear glass there is very little color distortion. Though the edge of ordinary and the optically clear glass have "color", the edge color of optically clear glass is approximately 50% less than the green tint of ordinary glass.
Both Starfire and Diamante are available in textured or non-textured sheets, finished table tops, counters, door inserts or heavy glass shower enclosures. An Onami textured table top, counter, room divider or shower enclosure made from Starfire or Diamante adds the style and brilliance of cut crystal to any application.

It is 1/2" starfire, what does add weight is the glass overflows & the glass bracing, which are not starfire. From what I understand, just the front & 2 sides are SF.

i really wouldn't think 2 glass overflows would make the tank weigh so much that it would take 4 people to move it over the normal 2 for a regular 180g. Does it also have euro bracing?

Two people could move it. But why drop your "BOYS" to the ground if you don't have to. It's not only lifting & carrying it, but placing it on the stand without anyone getting hurt. I guess the only to satisfy EVERBODY is to weigh the tanks. I move tanks all the time. Yeah, if you want to be a MACHO MAN use 2 guys. It's just a lot easier with 4, espicially lifting on to the stand. I have a 225 acrylic tank, 96"x30"x18". how many people do you think it took to put it on the stand? Oh, buy the way the stand is 42" tall.

So the fact that the tank is Starfire has NOTHING to do with the weight of the tank? Instead it is the fact that the two tanks are built a little different that account for the extra 20lbs or so of weight.
As far as Starfire being weaker for the same thickness, I don't think that would be true. Iron is an impurity in the glass. Removal of that impurity would seem to imply that Sio2 crystal lattice structure is more intact, thereby exhibiting increased fracture toughness.
Sorry to be long-winded, but I tire of inaccurate information on the web being stated as fact.

Rob the fact still remains, a 180 starfire or what ever glass is still a heavy mama. This dicussion (HIJACK)started over the fact that teach had 4 guys to carry the tank, who were called whimps. Which is better, 2 guys that use their backs or 4 guys that use their brains. I think this disscussion is over. Teach, sorry for the hijacking.

a regular 180g weighs around 300lbs, i sware i saw someone somewhere say something about a starfire weighing 400+... im probably wrong and my mind is playing tricks on me. I originally thought they weighed about the same.
