When cooking live rock in a separate container, you are not adding any nutrients to the water in the form of food or fish waste. The cooking process burns up the nutrients in the rock because that is all there is for the bacteria to consume. Live rock in your sump will be exposed to the nutrients in your water and will function just like the rock in your tank. The beneficial bacteria in live rock is beneath the surface so light is irrelevant.
