lighting-how much is too much
I currently have (2) 175w MH, and (3) 96w actinics running on my 75gallon. I have two 400w MH setups that I'm not using and was wondering if it would be beneficial to add one to my tank. I was thinking I could mount it directly in the center, which would be above the rest of the lights. Besides cooling, are there any other downfalls to this?

2 175's plus a 400 would be a LOT of light and would make the water temp go up pretty warm. My 400 MH will make the temp on my 265g go up at least 6 degrees if ran for only 6 hours. I think too the 400's are for deeper tanks so you probably don't need to go that high on the wattage to get the light penetration you need.
In my 265 I run (2) 250 MH's (1) 400MH (4)VHo blue actinics
I think it would be too much but I"m sure others will have some input too.
Welcome to the club

I agree, I think that a 400 in addition to what you have would be too much (SPS or LPS?). I'm only running (1) 250 MH along with three VHO's totally 245w in my 92, which is 24" deep and everything is doing fine. IMO

I would go with an all t-5 setup. Forget the MH with the 75g. Save yourself on electricity, heat issues and cost of bulb replacement.

The 175s are fine with a tank your size.

On my 75 I ran 2x250w MH and 4x110w VHO for 940w/12.5wpg.
Stuff grew well.

I am not one for referring to another site, but check out reefcentral, look under lighting or do a search and see what people are running on their 75g's. You could actually research for hours.

I replaced my 175w with a 250w on my 22g nano I have not had any heat issues .It may be overkill but eaverything grows like weeds. IMO once acclimated most corals can handle any light you throw at them. Depending on what bulbs you run there may not be a huge diff. say you are runing 175 iwaski 14k(spelling) then go to a 400w 20k xm there wont be much PAR diff. and as far as heat ,well placed fans can work wonders.

I had a 4x54w icecap t-5 retro over my 55g and it was some serious light. I could grow anything and everything and everything grew like weeds. I had xenia, zoos etc growing on my back glass. For only 18inches, IMO, MH are not needed if you have the righ t-5 setup, and there are no heat issues.

Why would it fry everything? The undersides of corals actually get more light with a sandbed.

The lack of nutrients in the water column allows more light to penetrate. You don't need as much light with a BB than one with sand.
