Go to bio reef you can get a brand new koralia 1 pump for like $35 dollars. Look on the bio reef web site under the monthly specials tab.

what size tank is it for? I have 2 K1's in my 34gal and it is plenty of flow... plus the stock return pump.

Its a 55 gallon tank and I'm wondering still for a rule of thumb of average amount of circulation. I was concerned with water circulation because of an outbreak of the red slime algae. I realized it was due to a piece of rock that was cured but still caused a spike in my nitrates. the levels are better now still a little high though. I'm now not sure how much more circulation i should add. The only coral i want to keep is Xenia. and I've heard they like dirty water??? and not that much current??
thank you

Agreed. I have 2 K-1's in my 54, and they don't provide enough flow.

So, after hearing everyones comments I've come to this conclusion. Since i am new to saltwater as well as the wet dry filtration system i was unaware of using pumps for circulation. I since concluded that slowing down your wet dry and adding intake circulation is the way to go. I have a powerful (for my set up) pump not giving my bio balls enough time to work. So, correct me if I'm wrong, the slower you trickle the water by the bio balls the better. Then you should increase the in tank circulation to keep everyone healthy.

As long as the main pump for the wet dry is not flowing more than the drain can handle, I would just leave it alone. Flow is one of those things that most people under estimate. Two Koralia 2's and your return pump will not be too much flow for a 55 gallon tank.

Just looked back through your posts. The Cap 2200 pump is not even close to being overkill. The pump pushes about 800 gph at zero head. Once you add the tubing and push water up the height of your tank it is probably pushing only 400-500 gph. I couldn't find a flow chart so that is a rough guess.

I have to lower the box on the overflow all the way to the bottom to keep up with the pump. and the streams through the trickle pan are solid streams. Is that to much?

Are the in tank overflow box teeth and the u-tube clean? How about the round sponge if you have one installed on the drain pipe in the outside box? That return pump should be the right one for your setup. What about drain plumbing? Do you have the usual corrugated flexible hose or some other kind of plumbing?

Yea its a normal overflow box and pool hose looking thing. I actually just cleaned the box in my tank after the slime outbreak it was covered in diatoms and slime the tube is still brown though. The round sponge was also cleaned today.

The round sponge is not really needed as long as your drain pipe is screened to protect from something large going down the pipe and blocking it. The pump that you have sounds like the right one for your setup. If you go with a much smaller pump you may have trouble maintaining a syphon in the overflow. I really wouldn't change anything.

great news haha i was worried after talking to someone about the flow rate over the bio balls. It makes sense that the faster the water passes by the less of a chance the good bacteria gets to clean the water. But if what you say is true about this pump and that set up I'm in business. All i need now is two Koralias
thanks
