Thanks Donald and Jason.

Anyone that does not read these threads is asking for trouble in Florida. Even a short a power outage of a hour or two can be a trouble.

This is also very informative.

Just curious if anyone has made any plans or changes since the meeting to prepare their tanks better.

Honestly, I haven't but I know I need to. The power here has flickered a few times in the last two weeks or so, but never more than 5 mins of it being off. I know it will get worse as the season wears on.

Great link teach.

I am working on setting up an automatic DC air pump that will come on 4 hours after the power is lost. So far less than $60 invested but I still need a deep cycle battery.

great reads... thank you. I've been mulling over the idea of buying a generator... Those make me really want to buy one. If I make it through this hurricane season without one, I will definitely buy one for the next.

Hello all, I've been considering something between a DC powered air pump and a generator. Does anyone have any experience with a heavy duty car/boat battery hooked up to a DC/AC converter? I would use a trickle charger to keep the batter at full charge when not in use. I don't know what to expect in run time if I use 1-2 Maxi-Jet 1200s powered by a fully charged heavy duty battery. Thanks

A few years ago I made a DIY battery backup system that uses a deep cycle battery, a pure sine wave converter and a relay.
Plug one wire into the wall and your pump(s) into another wire and it would automatically switch over to battery power when the power goes out and back again when the power comes back on.
It works great but it's pretty bulky because of the battery and converter.
I moved into a new house about 3 years ago and the power very rarely goes out so I don't use it any more.

I never really timed it to see how long the battery would last but there are formula's out there to calculate it for you.

I used the same set up as Jeff 4 or 5 years ago. I got somewhere around 24 hours with a maxjet1200. The deep cycle battery was about 2 years old but it was fully charged. You can buy a relay at radio shack to activate the pump when the power goes off.

I think you need to have two systems. One that provide backup for at least 8 hours or the longest you are away from your tank. This is very important if you have a DSB. Then a second system you can move into place such as a generator or multiple deep cycle batteries with a converter for extended power outages.

I was at BioReef yesterday and they had an air pump battery back system that would turn on if the power went off. I think it would last for 30 hours.

Right, the winds we should get will be stronger than Francis. Lots of old oak trees in town.

Jeanne was a tropical storm that felled a tall pine tree on my roof in '04.

Looks like it is time to review Dacro's data again. Two storms off the coast.
What if you lost power for more then a day.
