Fish Abuse

A few weeks ago while tinkering with the tank I was leaning over the top and reaching in when all of a sudden I heard a quick flutter of a fish flying out of the water followed by a smack to my left temple. Then back into the water it went. I never figured out which one it was. I figured one of them was upset about what he got to eat earlier and was getting back at me.

Well, earlier today after work I was on the cordless phone with a family member and just happened to get on the step stool that was sitting on the back-side of the tank. While talking I peered down from the top of the tank closely looking at an admired SPS frag. Then out of the blue (pun intended) a flash of orange flew up through the water and smacked me right in the nose. I jumped backward off the stool yelling "WTF!, oh man!" and began looking all around the top of the tank and floor to make sure the fish didn't jump out. I saw the fish in the tank hiding next to a corner rock looking a little stressed from the ordeal. It was one of my Anthias! I forgot about being on the phone and could hear the family member calling my name over and over. When I answered back they asked if I almost got into a wreck or something. I told them you called me at home how could I be getting into a wreck in my house! LOL Anyway, I told them what just happened. Afterward, I cut some egg-crate to cover the two openings, but noticed that is reduced the MH lighting. I really don't want to have the lighting noticeably cut back. - Thought I'd share the funny experience though!

That's a funny story ScubaTC. Maybe your fish are trying to tell you something, they definitely got your attention.

Scuba, that is beyond classic my freind. First the anthias hit you in the temple, then in the nose. And the relative thinking you were in a car accident after the "wth" comment and they called you at home. AI just about got tears in my eyes laughing soo hard thinking about that. Just one of those things that this hobby does to you.

Thanks for the report. I dont have anthias but I darn sure will get one now. I love a fish with attitude.

Scubatc, there a 2 different sides to the egg-crate. If it's the light difuser like we use in our reef tanks, try turning it over. One side will sort of block it, the other side won't, so I've be told. I've never used it on my tank although I've thought about it after the amount of fish that have jumped to their deaths.

I had a clown once that would draw blood everytime i would put my hands in the tank. I also used to reprimand him by catching him in my hand and holding him in time out. i don't think he ever learned his lesson though.
