Coraline Question

I'm still trying to figure out what is happening to my tank since the macro mishap. I now have been noticing my Coraline algae die off??? What is a cause of that? Also it looks that a fish is having some kind of fin issue?? WOW when it rains is pours.
Where can someone test my water and tell me whats going on here.
Please Help
Matt

Depending on which part of Jax you are in:
Rob's Reef is on Blanding in OP
Bio-Reef is off of Beach
Ocean Reef is on Atlantic
Jolly's Reef is on Blanding/Wilson near downtown.
Any of them will test the water for you.

All of them carry a full line of test kits and can recommend one to you as well as tell you the best way to correct any potential water issues you may have.

Most of the Pet Stores that carry fish products can test it as well but I am not real fond of allowing them to test my water and be able to trust the results because they use the 5 million-for-a-dollar test strips.

As for the coralline, it could be a die off from the chemical warfare from the macro die off.

I got my water tested by bio reef and they (unless they changed) used the same strips i have. I tested my water again today and the water is flawless haha well the best i can tell. So i feel my problem is with something i can not test with a strip. Whats the cheapest most accurate chemical test strip kit?
Thanks

The test strips can be a good indicator of needing to look further. None of them are truly "accurate". If you test with a strip and it is fine, then you get used to it. If the test strip shows something besides what you expect, then you know to test it with a better kit. The test strips (or all the ones I have used) test for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, PH and I don't remember what the fifth one is. None of them test for much more than that.

A typical test kit for each thing you want to test for would be about 6-8 dollars average. Some are more, some are less. The API Master SW Kit I have doesn't test for anything not on the strips. I also have a Ca, GH/KH, Magnesium, Phosphate, Copper and not sure what else. API also has a Master Reef Kit but I don't remember what all is in it.

From what you have said in other posts, about the macro die off, the diatom issue, and now the coralline dying, it sounds like it is all a result of the macro die off. Whatever it is, you need to do some serious water changes to try to get whatever is in the water killing things off out of the water. Unless, you can figure out that it is a mini-cycle that is killing it but I don't think a mini-cycle (nor a full cycle) would kill of coralline as most LR that is used to cycle a tank has coralline on it.

It could also be a Calcium deficiency. Have you tested the water for Calcium levels? And, Alkilinity? Both can have an effect on coralline and tank health in general.

I'm going to look into testing the calcium and further testing the alkalinity. I have done 2 25& water chances since the incident and I'm wondering how long and or how many water chances i should do?
Thanks

You say two "since the incident". How long has that been? I would step them up to two a week (at 25%) and possibly even 50% until you get it straightened out.

Matt, get a couple of test kits (Salifert Ca and Alk). Test your water in the tank and test the new water (that you plan to change). Verify the Calcium level (you may need to dose 2 part (calcium) or change salt solutions to get a higher calcium ratio.

Dacro is spot on. Provide Calcium and Alk and coraline will grow almost anywhere.

If it was me I would do a good water change.
Get the kits that dacro recommended, know you tank levels and the levels of your water change water.
Run some good carbon to help clean out any impurities.

get yourself some oceans blend part one and two for your calcium and alkalinity and please also pick up some test kits so you can really figure out what is going on.
