Black Powder

A 180 Gallon Reef was donated to my local High School from which I graduated. The previous owner (a cop that has since moved to Ken.) was using multiple suppliments, this that and the other. The kids at the school seem to know more about the tank than the teacher. The teacher I think got stuck with it and has no interest in it whatsoever and seems more annoyed with the entire situation than anything. Knowing how the school system works here, the original transaction probably went something like this:

Cop: I have a 180 gallon reef I would like to donate to your school.

Administrator: Sure!!, we'll take it. Knowing good and well nobody in the school knows anything about it, nor are there any stores or facilities pertaining to reefs in over a 50 mile radius. And the teacher lives over 100 miles from the nearest reef store.

This is a first year science teacher, that was volunteered to handle this reef, I'm sure against his will. He is looking to pay someone else to take care of it, if that shows how much interest he has in it. I turned him and the kids onto RC for starters, just to give them a broad and very basic understanding of reefs as well as some background info.

At any rate (now that you know the situation) I was milling around in the large box of suppliments that came with the tank and came across this stuff called "black powder". I had heard of it before, but never knew anybody to actually use it. The jar was of course empty. I looked it up and it boasts of a color and growth enhancing formula and is very cheap for 15.99 for 5,000 gallons. Could something that cheap really be worth a darn? My question is: Does anyone else use this? Is it any good? Is it even worth getting? Or is there another growth/color enhancer that is better? What does everyone recomend? Or is this just a gimmick that doesn't do any better than anything else or nothing at all? I do use Reef Plus by Seachem in my own system for vitamins b/c I thought Coral Vite was too expensive for the amount and I noticed immidiate results when I started using the reef plus. Reef plus seems to be kinda low key and not on many shelves, so that leads me to believe that there might be something better and more popular.

I have also seen:
Spectra Vital
Reef Vital
Combo Vital (spectra vital and black powder combined)

and reef roids on RC

What does everyone like?

I have heard rumors that Black Powder is nothing but dessicated cattle blood.

Clean water. There are things I add to my tank but for a school you can't beat clean water.

Very well, sounds good. I had heard that about additives and I stopped using everything except the vitamins. I guess I had just convinced myself that they were neccesary for excelerated growth. Not that I am complaining about the growth in my tank at all.

Am I correct in assuming the same goes for "Essential Elements"? That is kind of an ironic name for the chem if its not essential.

Less is best. You know what your tank needs. Most of the rest is just marketing.

I have kinda gotten that feeling since I stopped using all the other chems and there has been no decline in growth or general health. In fact, I would really say that growth has accelerated since I stopped all the hard chems (they probably stunted growth for the 6 months I was using them lol). I haven't added the reef plus or the essential elements lately b/c I have been out for a while, but I was begining to feel guilty for not putting anything in the tank except RO/DI water. Like you said, less is better I guess, let water, light, and nature do the rest.
