Anyone interested in a coral database
I was reeding on another forum about this. They are looking at creating a database of all the named corals, and the members of the forum who had the corals. The upside is it would provide a way for club members to purchase or trade frags with other club members rather than going online to get that frag that they are dying to find (I am amazed to see the awsome variety of corals that members have), and help a club member figure out what coral they could get as good "trade bait". The major downside is it would require alot of participation from members to update their info when they aquire a new frag or coral, and a couple of people to keep the list updated.
In effect, it would be something like: Bali Green slimer - Mecold, Teach, ETC...... You could have a picture of the coral as well as the name so people could see what the coral is. Of course, it wouldn't strictly be for "rare" corals. People could show their favorites too.
If enough people are interested, it could be a good way to aquire, trade, and even sell some frags.

Great idea!!!
We have started something similar with our Daylily club.
I'm an optimist, but keep in mind that depending how elaborate it becomes there will be an amount of work necessary to maintain it.

Oh yeah, would need a little bit of help on it from a couple of people. Maybe setting up either an excel document hosted online, or something simple like a thread in the members only section.

I think having a coral database would be great for ID purposes alone. The possibility of buying/trading/selling would be an added perk.

This is an awesome idea.
The key to success will be in how easy it is to use.
I write web applications for a living so may be able to help out.
What kind of things does our NFMAS host allow us to use?
i.e. .net, java, php, etc.

Jeff, perhaps you can collaborate with George (lageo04), since he maintains NFMAS...

Sounds like a great idea! For me though I can only say "I have a green one, a purple one, a blue one......"

I am about the same way. I only know the scientific name of a few key pieces in my tank. Namely b/c when I bought most of my stock it came either mislabled, if labled at all. Some pics are so sketchy online with tricky lighting it makes it difficult to make positive ID's without physically seeing the same pieces in somebody elses tank.
Thanks for the link Rob

this is a fantastic idea, someone just needs to head it up as a leader and all applications to the database be sent to that one person to compile

That is the point I know you have some sweet acros, I have a cool blue one on my frag rack! All we would need is a picture of it. You could add a funny name if you wanted

I can almost assure you that most identifications of corals for sale are best guesses, with only a few being accurate. This would be the reason for a picture of the corals. Maybe a topdown picture if possible, and a side picture. We are all aware that corals look differently in our tanks than they do in others tanks if for no other reason than we use different bulbs. Heck I took Rob a maricultured acro that looked boring in my tank, but it looked amazing in his "fragzilla" because of the 14 or 20k halides (the reason I am so hung up on halides .
