Friday, April 13th, 2007, 6am, Jumbo The Shrimp sucumbed to what appeared to have been a bacterial infection. At 9 weeks 6 days of age, Jumbo was the last survivor of his clutch. Autopsy photos were scheduled, but delayed due to emergancy finincal issues, and by the time they were attempted, decomposition was too great.

So ends this attempt to raise peppermints. In some ways I'm relieved. I've been wanting to make some changes to the equipment, but haven't dared to because I didn't want to disturb or stress the youngster too much. The success I achieved on this attempt far exceded anything I had hoped for.

I'm still waiting to hear back about my transfer, so Phase 2 is still on hold for the moment.

Sorry man.....this is bad.....

i know how you feel, but this is why only a select few are interested in these type of projects, once one of us Extreme Reefers accumulate the experiance & knowledge (along with sharing ideas & attempts) maybe more will help us.

i would love to try to raise shrimps, but im financially incapable & im raising several other animals + my Dendronepthya study, it may be a few years, but ill keep watch of you two so i dont miss out on anyhting important

Nice journal, I am sorry about jumbo it seems that you almost made it!

Man it has been a long time since I have visited here, let me catch everyone up to speed. I am also raising shrimp. I started out with peppermints, but fell in love with the Fire shrimp and the Skunk Cleaner shrimp. So far I have had both showing eggs. However, I have been too busy to foster these with a keen eye due to my larval shrimp food setup. I mainly raise copepod and brineshrimp for my larvae. I feed these a combination of Nannocloropsis(DT's/old culture), Thalassiosra(Reed Mariculture), Tetraselmis(this is the on I will start culturing soon as I recieve it from CCMP), and Isocrysis "T-ISO. Here are some pictures of my copepods:

My Larval food rearing is coming to an end and I will soon be able to supply the larvae with an indefinate supply of food. Then I will follow In the footsteps of Palmtag and Holt with the fire shrimp.

However, I do not want to make the move until I get a good microscope, but progress is moving faster than I thought it would.

Do we get a "Lessons Learned" write up from your experience?

I just read the whole thread in one shot and have a few ideas. First is that a 10g rearing tank is waaaaaaay to big. One of those .5-1g "critter keeper" plastic tubs might work out better. I'd stick with the sponge filters. BB tanks have minimal surface area for beneficial bacterial to colonize.

You didn't mention the type of base water you used for your water changes. Was your SW made with RO/DI, tap, distilled.....???? Did you age your freshly mixed SW or dump it straight in??? If you run a stable reef system I think I'd be way more comfortable pulling water change water from the reef tank vs mixing it fresh. That would provide stabilized and established water vs raw harsh chemically altered water. Plus it might add food of some type.

Have you ever considered an emulsion type food regiment? As in, you put the food in a flask, add sterile water and shake the heck out of it. Then only feed the suspension and not the solids. From the sounds of it the shrimp larva are itty itty bitty. Being that they are that small even the most minute food particle would be a T-bone steak to them. Now I have no experience in raising shrimp to adulthood other than brine shrimp. But I breed some rather touchy fish from time to time and have always found that massive feedings of the smallest possible food work the best. Followed by a massive water change of course. Spirulina and hard boiled egg yolk are my favorite foods for microscopic fry. At a pinch to a beaker w/ some distilled water, shake shake shake and feed the suspension (discard the remaining solids).

I have a motto in my breeding room and it goes as follows. "feed em often, feed em well, change water daily or go to H E double hockey sticks!!!!"

I know this is an old thread, but for information's sake, the larval peps are about .5cm and might eat the solution within the first two days (before they go to z2). After that I doubt it they would eat it. Bbs are the right size from day one, but they tend not to be strong enough to hold them until about z4 on day 8.
