Peppermint shrimp, Here We GO
well i have joined in on breeding these guys i have 2 right now in my 20g and have had 1 for 3 months and one for a week and well the next day after getting my new shrimp, one had eggs and that was 1 week ago so i think if they are going to hatch they will here soon.
tank wise for them i have a 5.5g set up with a hangon filter that i made a sponge to cover the intank. and a rio 50 which as of now is alot of flow and i also have some filter media with my rio 50. i have a good 2 to 3 pounds of LR and about a 1lb of LS which sand is not used really in breeding but i thought since they needed some where to get some food for themselfs in their life start the sand was a good place to find it. i keep water temp at 79 and my SG was really high today but i did a water change so i hope it is lower now but i will check tomarrow. i plan on feeding SDMP from the start and then brine a week into there lives along with SDMP at the same time. if you have any comments or anything that could help it would be great.
now here the main problem with using LR and LS there is cycling and its only been cycling for a week but i used sand and water from my other tanks so i am hoping it will be ready in time. i placed 1 hermit and 1 snail in there today to test the water if they are alive when i return from work tomarrow then i will feel better about using it for my shrimp hatchlings

Update
couldn't really see the shrimp this morning but i did noticed that my other shrimp molted which i might get another peppermint tomarrow since right now i only have 2 in a 20g and think i can get away with 1 more. well the snail and hermit i placed in the hatchlings tank sunday are still alive (from what i saw) the hermit was moving and i couldn't really find the snail he is soo small. but if they are not dead by the time they eggs hatch i am going to go ahead and place the new hatchlings in there and the tank as of now has a penguin 125 (i think) and a rio 50 powerhead alot of flow right now which i can lower the flow on the rio 50. there is about 2 to 3 pounds of live rock and about 1lb of sand still not sure what i am going to do about the sand

I've noticed that if they do not hatch they will remain on the left over exoskeleton. Otherwise they have hatched and been filtered/skimmed/eaten or you'd notice about 500 or so fry.
Good luck with this. I've heard that they can take anywhere from 10 to 30 days to mature. Mine go every 10-14.
As for the 2nd shrimp being fertilized by the 1st with eggs, they are hermaphrodites and can fertize each other.

I've heard that they turn translucent and/or silvery before hatching (thus fertilized). I think that the unhatched fry just start developing their eyes more right before (~2 days) they hatch and thus appear to be translucent all of the sudden, but they probably are all along. The eyes are very small black spots, as you'd expect, and this is all I've ever noticed before a hatch. As for the color of unfertilized eggs... ???

Don't loose hope, your dealing with living things, and sometimes they don't do what you'd expect or hope. If this batch doesn't hatch, you'll probably have another batch before too long.
