Thanks for the info. I'll use this as a model for my future endevors. Once I get my system swapped I would like to have a go at breeding clowns. I have a ton of experience in breeding exceptionally difficult FW fish. I look forward to the challenge.

I will start a day bu day thread of my tank rebuild and once I have breeding stock I'll do a day by day of the whole deal.
BTW, this is one of the few informative links i have found (jus under my nose). Any other links would be a great help.

We have a pair of clown fish that produce a clutch of eggs (right way to say it?) every three weeks - like clockwork. It is very cool. There are lots of babies (food, dang it) in the nooks and crannies of our tank (95 gal reef tank with an abundance of pulsating zenia, a beautiful flowerpot (blueish) lots of silver pulsating zenia; pom pom zenia, etc.
I am hoping to just put a little refugium inside the tank and siphon eggs as they are about to hatch and put them into the refugium (complete with sand, some rocks, some zenia, etc.) Is this crazy? Will it work if I buy food and put it into that tank? We had a bunch of babies living behind a torch coral but the torch got sick (I think a fledgling serpent star fish died and the rot got 'em) so the babies got nabbed by other fish. But they were about a third of an inch long at the time. We were close! Help. These babies will probably hatch tonight and I was hoping to set up the refugium today. It will have the same water as the tank since it would be INSIDE the tank, so there's no salt shock for the babies, right? I am not the aquarist in the family - that is my husband. I am just the working mom who wants to save the babies. We do trade our coral for supplies at our local marine reef and fish store. THANKS!

Why is the word "squid" under my name? So strange.

 Welcome to TRT!!!
The word squid is under your name as you are new to the forum. As you get more posts it will change to other things like "Little Fishy". Eventually you will be able to change it to what you want it to say if you so choose.
I will defer answering your question on the baby clowns and let Joe, or someone else with experience in this area answer that.

Thats awsome that you want to save the babies....Its is although a little more than putting them in a refugium and feeding. There are alot of "critters" that live in a refugium that would love for you to do that! lol
You have to set up a seperate tank and water that has no "critters" to eat the babies.
As for food the only thing the babies will eat is Rotifers, you will have to set up a rotifer tank to feed the babies for the first 7 days http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...02/breeder.htm
Then I reccomend BBB( baby brine shrimp) you can hatch these guys from a shell(pretty easy)
http://www.livefoodcultures.com/babybrineshrimp.html
The best way to move the Larvae from your show tank is my way of tile.If you can see were the eggs are being laid you can place a small piece of tile down and hopefully the clowns will lay the eggs on it next time, If Not you can catch them as they hatch in the show tank but the stress level on them is very high!
anymore questions let me know.
"good luck it is alot of fun and enjoyment watching and learning in this Hobby"
Joe

I have a batch of eggs (clown) ready to hatch within a couple of days. I did some reading (can't get any rotifers in time) and someone else mentioned First Bite Granules, and Ocean Nutrition Instant Baby Brine Shrimp 20 Grams for the food for the first week. After that (if any live) I plan on feeding in the baby brine shrimp that I am growing today 2/4/09. Any thoughts?
I am moving the rock that the eggs are on into a seperate tank (actually going to use a plastic tote...about 10 gallons) with water from my main tank. I have two air stones and a heater (plan on running at 78 degrees) I read that you should not do anything to the water the first few days, then slowly add fresh sw (from my main tank).
any other helpful ideas? I am going to keep it dark for the first few days as well...then start on light
Any help much appreciated
Scott
