No, it is not normal pairing behavior, as an attack like that implies that the larger of the two you added was already a female. Also, why did you add 2 more clowns? They will coexist in pairs, but after that it's pretty hopeless.

If it's hiding, and she won't let it get close to her, then likely it's a female. And yes, females fight, which I'd assume is why she's fighting with it.

It is best to buy them in pairs when they are still small and about the same size, but even then there are no guarantees. I bought 5 Ocellaris to put in my 40 gallon and have 3 of them co-existing peacefully as of now. That will probably change some day, but they are all about the same size still so no dominance being shown as of yet. There is also a blue devil damsel in there for them to harass.

clowns are picky by nature. the female will kill anyone she cannot tolerate, male female or anything in between. the best way to pair them is to put a large group together (5-6) and then remove the extras when you get a pair. If you are adding just one or 2 clowns to a tank with an existing clown then you will want to start by leaving it in a net in the water. if there is hostility in the first 15 min then it will not work.

in the end if you want a pair it is better to buy them paired.
