Question

I WANT to grow snail and crabs !!!!

I am now the proud owner of 3 75 gallon tanks and a sump of the same size. We are going to set up 2 for propagating corals but would like to use 1 which is currently divided in half for breeding snails and hermit crabs for eventual sale. Any suggestions for getting started and keeping the population on the right track would be greatfully welcomed! Excited and overwhelmed!!

One of the guys from the local club runs Project DIBS, which is geared towards propagation of various inverts, including a lot of snails. There arent really any crabs I've heard of, and they would surely eat snail larvae if they were in the same tank, but this thread should get you started. Good luck!

Now that sounds like a very cool proposition and I definitely wish you the best with it. If you are successful I will become a customer.

You 2 are the best! We've got an old job site trailer so if any trouble ( leaks, explosions lol) it will be away from the house! The tanks are set, we are working on plumbing and lighting. What' s the best bet ( anyone?) for buying salt in bulk? Or is that my best bet? I will post some pics soon so everyone can see our hillbilly setup!

I would try to contact the salt companies, or look on their web sites, and see if they have a distributor that would be willing to sell it to you in bulk.

Now you have really peeked my curiousity for seeing these setups.

Why would anyone not encourage an idea link this? That's crazy! You've got nothing to loose, except some time, and everything to gain by doing it.

Great links BTW! You should also check out (if you haven't already) The Plankton Culture Manual. Most all larval forms of critters need to eat plankton and this book will spell out how to grow several types of phyto as well as pods and BBS.

Florida Aqua Farms sells it probably the cheapest and most current publication and they carry a lot of other stuff that is useful for plankton culture.

The snails shouldn't be too difficult... Before I broke my 75g down I had baby snails popping up everywhere in it. I wasn't trying to raise them, they were just doing their thing naturally.

There was someone on RC who was trying to raise blue legs.... Not sure how far he was able to get them. The major challenge with some crustaceans, like crabs, is that some need a cue from their environment to metamorphose to the next stage. Still worth trying though

Also, see if you can't get e- access to some of the scientific marine journals at your local library or if you have a college library nearby and do a search for the species you want to culture. There might be some tidbits of info in there on life history, diet, etc.

Have you thought about adding some shrimps to the mix? Peppermints are easy to raise, maybe some of the others???

Now, I can't believe Aquawolf and Crvz haven't said this, but there is a fee for this Pics of your setup should suffice As well as keeping us updated on everything Best Wishes!

pictures are a necessity, indeed, thanks for calling me out on that suziq21!

For salt, usually I buy mine from drsfostersmith.com. for your case, instant ocean is probably fine, and you can order 5-6 buckets and only pay one shipping charge ($13 or so). With other places they'll charge an extra shipping fee, which is why I use the drs. The price is good (~$30 for a 160 gallon bucket) and the shipping is quite tolerable.

IO also makes one ton bags of salt that they sell to aquariums, but it may be a little overkill in your case.

I was trying the subtle approach when asking for pictures this time around.

If I order a one ton bag of salt will come over and help me move it around when needed?

I suppose you could use one of those plastic beach shovels if you promised to keep the salt clean, but no wheelbarrow only buckets.
