What size?

What size tank would be a good size tank to have a few horses? Is thier a specific species that will do fine in a smaller setup?

(Not to take away from this site but there's a ton of seahorse info there.)

I've kept a trio of erectus in a 25 gallon and a dozen dwarves in a 3. Unless you're prepared to raise or buy a constant supply of live food I wouldn't recommend dwarves. Try to find captive-bred ponies. They're more expensive but are usually more free of parasites and better adapted to frozen foods.

I know very little about seahorses, so hopefully some more folks will chime in, but those that get to 11" or so will need taller tanks. So the tank size will depend on the species you choose.

Chris makes a good point. You will want to do some serious research before jumping into the seahorses. You can look at www.seahorsesource.com for information about various breeds that are captive bred. The mature size of the horse should determine you tank size as they actually like more vertical swimming room than horizontal. They also have the temperature range for each species listed so you will know immediately whether you are going to need a chiller or not.

I wish you the best with whatever way you decide to go.

Yeah I know, I gotta do lots of research I don't want the little guys to die =(... My 12 is pretty stable @ 77 it doesn't fluctuate really at all. I think I may be able to get it lower or raise the temp depending on what I'm going to do.

I wonder if you would be able to lower the temp some just by pointing a fan at the water surface if you have an open top system. That might be enough to get it done to perhaps 75 or so and help with extra evaporative cooling. It would definitely be worth testing out to see what happens.

I have a pair in my 14gal, granted it is just them and my goby. They seem to do fine and are happy . I wouldn't put anything else in there now obviously other then some plants when I can find them. IMO though I wouldn't go any lower then a 14gal whatever you decide.
