Updated tank shot

Work in progress, but it's progressing.

Had to pruin a lot do to a flat worm problem, but it's going well for my first real planted tank. The seahorse loves the hunting of all the pods.

Good Stuff.

i like how you use all the different types of algae, very colorful and lots of textures!

i cannot seem to find any seahorses in there... i must be looking in the wrong places... or the size i'm expecting is too different! lol

You guys are all so nice. Tank has been a chore. Weird to fight to keep nitrate and phosphate present, as opposed to keeping it at zero. Seems when I want it I can't keep it and when I don't want it I have it.

The seahorse is kinda camera shy. If you look directly under the feeding dish mounted on the wall and through the halmedia, I think she is chillin right there. She's the yellow. I have a hard time finding her sometimes when she's right in front. She does love to hitch on that gorg right in front of the powerhead. Kinda fun.

Amy, ya my flow is kinda high. I'm running a turn over of 47x. That's why you see that purple pipe on each upper corner of the tank. Spraybars that return through the rocks. No dead spots, good stuff. Grip of pods come out of the rocks surrounding the spraybars too.

Icebear, keeping all the different species of macro together can be a challenge. Some grow faster then others. The red grape seems to attract nuissance algae for some reason. I lost a few species to other species. I'm down to 11 species of algae but it's working. I pruin often in small amounts. At least once a week.

Whiskey, it is such a manly fish.

Kevin,

I am guessing that even though the turn over is "high" since it is so distributed your pony friend doesn't mind?! True of false?

I think the spray bar is a terrific idea - I tried the concept on the first tank, but I think I could have pushed more flow through it for better results.

Bet you could get trates up if you turned off the spray bar

HOw about lights, what are you using? I had trouble keeping the fern like calupura under my t5's I think I bleached it out, but was never sure. I tried it 3 different times and it would be ok for a few weeks and then bleach out.

What other things are you noticing in this type of tank? How long has you had it set up?

Down to 11 kinds huh

There is no place the seahorse can not swim in the tank, she even hitches to the sprayabrs. The flow is coming from such a wide area it is really pretty gentle.

Thanks, I've been working on perfecting it for many years now. Turns out the simple method is the best after all.

I just pulled all the chaeto out, maybe that will help. Hopefully.

The tank is lit with a 150w 14K HQI fixture. There is also a set of the Ecosystem moon lights on there.

I had no trouble growing fern under my T5's, it was actually kind of a nuissance how much it grew. I wonder if it was something else. Sometimes when introducing fern it is best if you clip the runners so there is only one or two leaves per runner on there. That way if part of the algae does go sexual you just loose the one strand, not all of the fern. Fern is like one large cell so if part of it goes it all goes, but with a little clip on the runners you can make one cell 10. Dig?

Tank has been up for over a year. Been running just as a macro tank since about Feb. There is no filter other then the refugium. No anything. It's all natural. This has been fun and interesting in it's own right.

This is going to sound weird for people who know how I take care of my other tanks (at least a 30% water change once a week, I used to do it twice a week) but I don't do water changes on the tank. Since Jan I did one when I moved the seahorse in, was a 10g and the water came fromt he seahorse QT which had a nitrate of 20ppm. I did a second last week after using the flat worm exit. Other then that o water changes.

IMO because of the lack of water changes and the lack of mechanical filtration I get a lot more goodies then other people. I have a ton of pods, I have a free CUC between the pods, stomella's, and feather dusters. The feather dusters actually grow so much it might be a problem because the wife thinks they are gross, but when the macro fills in you can't see them.

When my peppermint shrimp have babies (every few weeks) you can see the babies in the tank for a few days then they get eaten, but they are there for a food source.

Some corals like the mushrooms and tow of the species of zoo's, as well as the yuellow polyps grow like mad. It's insane how fast they grow, but the rics grow fairly slow.

I feed the tank nothing but mysis, once or twice a day depending on how long I am home.

Mainting Ca and Alk is a couple drops a week not a couple capfuls like on my other systems.

To much info?

I had like 16, but that was to ambitious. To be honest I might cut it back to a few favorite ones. Maybe one red, one green, one blue, one brown so there is more rooom for them to grow without weekly pruining. Not that I mind, but it might look more "clean"
