fake plants are ok as long as they can hitch onto them. I have a fake coral ornament in my tank and the girls love it plenty of places to hold onto and love searching in all the nooks and crannies.

real plants are more fun

They might even be cheaper. Try reefcleaners.org

Any of the algaes are fine. There are many corals that work well too.

I keep my seahorses with algaes. I try to avoid ones that grow to fast as they kill the other plants, but the faster they grow the more they filter out generally speaking.

Favorite slow growers are red grape, red kelp, sargassum, halmedia, codium, and ochotodes.

Fast growers that are good filters and good hitches are prolifera, taxifloria, and green grape.

You need to ensure you have a way to keep the tank cool. Optimum for most species (including Erectus and Reidi) is 74 F.

Also, flow needs to be lower than a reef tank.

Anemones are not good tankmates.

read extensively on seahorse.org before purchasing. Both the library articles and the chat forums.

The only kind you can keep in a tank that size are H zosterare (dwarf seahorses) and they are very hard to keep because you have to feed them live food twice a day (baby brine shrimp typically).

Any other need a minimum tank size of 20G, more like 29G for the larger species such as Erectus or Reidi.

You should read up on this site before you get any
http://www.seahorse.org/library

There is an excellent beginners care guide.
