most of what you see is just going to be a variety of calupera. even the red stuff. all of the algae will be fine. as far as a starfish... you should look at brittle stars only, serpents and CC stars may turn predatory on the horses.

If you want to keep manderins then you should plan on a refugium.

When it comes to manderins they really need a mature tank, You will only get hurt if you buy one , Your tank is way to new and will not be able to support it. I don't know that that size tank will supply the food for the maderin, plus he will be eating food that the seahorses like also.

i dont plan on getting a mandarin for a while. the ones at the pet store do eat frozen foods..so thats a plus....the seahorses eat frozen has well.
my first priority is seahorses though..and maybe a pair of pipefishs

I have a fire shrimp..he seems pretty mellow..doesn't really bother anything... but then again I don't have seahorses. I feed him a silverside once a week though... I put my hand down in the tank..and he runs over and takes it right from me...
I have been thinking about getting a second one...to see if it will make him more social..he hangs out on the back of a rock all day ...so I don't see him much...my shrimp in my other tank did that until I got it a mate..heh.
My LFS has a seahorse tank setup..and he has some sort of small goby in there with them...white with purple stripes...
