Reidi Seahorses?

Are the Reidi Seahorses very hard to keep? I do understand that Seahorses in general are very delicate and hard to raise but I've heard some breeds are actually more delicate than others. I am alittle undecided on which breed to buy. There is a lfs that has 3 yellow reidi and they say they are tank raised. I was looking at getting the sunbursts because I heard they were one of the hardiest to keep. Can someone give me some advice please? I don't seem to understand the differences in the breeds.

Is there something specific that makes you like them so much?

Oh, all of my levels are great except my nitrate. It is at 10. Is this dangerous to seahorses?

Reidi are one of the easier ones to keep, but one of the hardest to raise the babies if you are thinking about breeding. They are also one of the larger horses.

Just as a word of caution seahorses can change color at will - it is their camouflage so just because they are yellow or orange in the store does not mean they will stay that way. Stores selling on color most likely aren't real sure what they are selling.

I do not mean to be super critical of local lfs but it seems many will carry seahorses that they claim to be tank breed yet can not track a supplier/breeder. If you purchase from your lfs I would encourage you to ask where they were breed and a contact number for the breeder if possible.

The best advice I can give with horses is GO SLOW! READ READ and READ some more. They are wonderful creatures, but it is different than fish or coral keeping - different rules apply.

I would start buy thinking about what kind of tank you want - is it a seahorse only tank, do you have other saltwater tanks, will you want coral fish ect? WHat is your focus for the tank?

Then you can decide what temperature you want to keep your tank at. I am only familiur with the tropical kind - Erectus, Kuda, and Reidi all lovely horses, their may be more, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

After you decide your temperature then you can look into your breed of choice and their care requirments.

Hope that helps get you started!!!

BTW I love yoru screen name!

I am only interested in having seahorses. I do have a clown fish in the tank now but I will probably have to give it back to the fish store. I do not plan to add corals or any fish. My tank is 55gal and has been set up for about a year. I gave all of my other fish away so I could get horses. I have been reading and researching for about 6 months now but still have so many questions. Thank you for your help!
