Question

Pipefish?

Somewhere along the line I saw a reef tank with a pipefish and thought it looked really awesome. I know nothing about this fish but after reading about seahorses and seeing that the pipefish is located in the same discussion forum I wonder; is it a difficult fish to keep also? Curious.

That are very much the same, I think may even be a little harder to keep, They feed about the same and are alittle more fagile, I think if You ever plan on having them it is best to keep in a tank with only pipe fish or with seahorses.

As far as seahorses go, I don't think they are that hard to keep, Not for everyone ,But CB's that feed on frozen foods can really be pretty easy to raise.

Sometimes the horses will hitch to the pipes and that will bug them... otherwise they get along fine. Keep in mind that some pipes mouths are smaller than the average horse so they may require smaller food. I had 2 flame pipes that could not eat frozen mysis or brine so i had to keep them on cyclopeeze and frozen rots.

Pipes and seahorses can be mixed together, but there is a definte risk of mixing different species of syngnathids as sygnathids can be asymptomatic carriers for various strains of vibrio. While the pipe, or seahorse, might be caring the bacteria for years without incident, exposing a syngnathid to a strain of the bacteria they have no previous resistance to can be problamatic to say the least. The same danger exists in mixing seahorses and pipes as it does with mixing different species of seahorse in the same tank.

It is not that it is impossible, it is that it is often fatal to one of the two inhabitants.

There are steps you can take to help shift the odds a bit, however I would not recommend mixing syngnathid species for a newb.
