The cost is really not bad, You can do a very nice and low cost set up. I have a 37 gallon with live rock and alot of macro algae, The only form of filter I use id a cheap airstone skimmer and for water movement a small power head, Just take your time and let the tank cycle. You can also use a cheap hang on filter. As You start we can all help you with the set up. When You buy a tank get a taller tank. I will try to fine the pictures here on TRT and put them on for You to see. When You do get the seahorse get tank raise and not wild caught seahorse, make sure they are feeding on frozen Mysis. The wild caugth can be weak and not eat frozen. If You buy them from the local fish store have them feed them to see. and look for ones with roundede bellies. Not sunken in.

You can set up a nice tank for a few hundren or even less. You don't have to spend alot. You can do it in a 20 gallon tall or 37 gallon , You can use base rock ot deco coral. Just not all that much needed. Do some shopping around. Just make sure that you want a seahorse tank, Don't want to add other fish that will stress the seahorses and not allow them to get any food, You can put pipe fish with them , snails and the like. But do ask ?'s and read what You can. We have alot of people here on TRT that are more then will to help you.

I have a 38g with 50 lbs of live rock and two Whisper hang on back filters. I do have a skimmer that I put on about once a week for a few hours (no sump).
Captive bred horses will run you $60 and up from what I've seen. If I'm allowed to direct you to another site (?) please check out www.seahorse.org it really has all the info you could possibly want.
A note, since you're new, please stay away from dwarf seahorses. They require you to hatch baby brine shrimp DAILY.
Best of luck!!! Oh, check your local paper, there's usually someone out there selling their tank!

Here is a picture of the tank, This is when it was just starting to keep them in the tank, It is filled in with macro now that I have to pull out and go into other tanks all the time. You can see the skimmer on the left side top, You don't have to have one right off. Then the powerhead with the sponge on the upper right side for water movement the one in the center was to the time I cycle the tank. I also have a heater. I don't think I need it, I have very nice lights on it. 130 watts of PC's with fans.

1 more quick question:

Would an undergravel filter in a 20gal tall tank be okay? my dad who has a 75-gallon reef tank said that he isn't sure so i'm hoping that you might know...

thanks again,

do not go undergravel. just get a hob filter. Undergravel is really bad for filtration.
