new seahorse tank setup and ?s
im working on setting up a 30gal seahorse /refugium display tank
in line with my 120 reef
and i would like to know
what are some of the
basics of a seahorse tank
im going to have 5 or 6 difrent kinds of macro alge
like 10 to 50 lbs of rock and 20lbs of live sand
sand sifting gobie if he wont bother the horses
snals crabs ect
i dont see any problem with putting some cleaner shrimp in there(every one i put in my 120 reef got eaten by my anemones )
whats too much flow for seahorses
do i need to worry about deases from my reef getting in to the seahorses (never had a problem yet 2 years up and running on the reef )
feding what kind of food would be best
and what kind of seahorses to look at getting?
as far as the tank goes its a 30gal
thats going to be getting its water from a pump in my sump for my 120 gal reef and be returning the water through an overflow driled in to the tank going back to the sump for the 120 gal reef
im putting a 65 watt compact florscent on it
and i have a 200gph hob filter for extra flow if the 200gph pump in the sump cant supply enough flow .....
ill b posting pics of my reef and work on the seahorse tank soon ....
hopeing for some feedback before i get started

Remember that you cannot have too many/any other fish or anything in the same tank because sea horses to dont hunt for food and are very picky so you have to be careful.

I think temperature will be an issue most horses do best in much lower temps than a reef tank

You don't want high flow and you don't need tons of light either.

high flow and light are actually ok *IF* you provide sections of the tank with low light and low flow.

I like good light to help with the plant life I keep in my seahorse tanks, Flow is also good to have, Not extreme but good flow, they live in areas of good flow, even in the grass beds the flow is pretty strong

The best luck I ever had been with a AGA 26 Bowfront, 110w PC (2x 55watt), Seaclone 150, Emperor 280 filter. This provided enough lighting for live rock/ live plants, and good water movement. I kept four sea horses and was able to get them to breed twice before I had to relocate and they all died in the move (too stressful). I used this setup for two years.

Thanks in advance .

I'm not sure what you mean, More details about what he looks like, if he is eating, how active he is and so on.
