The Macros and Grasses come and go. I collect them at my home on Cape Cod and replenish the system as my fat-butt tuxedo urchin devours them Sarah Lardizabal has become my new macro and grass guru and I'm soon going to be able to have my marine planted tank (different tank from this).

Tonga branch is the way to go. With a low flow, high nutrient system, other types of rock become detritus traps. If you look, you will see that other flat, base rock, has hair algae. Even on the areas of the Tonga that get the HA, it is a smallish surface/holdfast, and is easily removed. The ponies love hitching on the Tonga Branch.
When using the Live Rock, keep it centered and allow the flow around the tank. Again, if not, it'll get real nasty where the rock abutts the glass.
The more macro, the better. The grasses don't even do as good a job in helping keep water in check. When I put in the eel grass, I started to get hair algae again. I put in more macro, and POOF, it started to go away again.
You see the canister filter return up there... I use the canister filter (only from time to time) when I remove hair algae to keep it from settling on other rock and growing. Otherwise, it is kept dry and not in use. It's basically my vacuum cleaner!

I notice... and this i think is important... that you don't have any calupera in there, very smart. what kinds of macro do you have in there?

Actually, I do, from time to time, use caulerpa serrulata or prolifera. Problem is, the urchin eats it like pasta. I have no problems using caulerpas. I don't plan on using this rock for any other reefs etc. and I am the kind of person who prunes, and "pretties" often. So it's not much of a problem. *knocking on something wood-like* I've not had any go sexual on me either.
What you see there is "Dead Man's Fingers" or Codium, on the left.. the green rubbery looking stuff. The grass is eel grass. The macro on the top left is Bladderwort, which needs pretty good current and if not near the return nozzle, would wither in a slow/slack tank. I also use sargassum but that too gets quickly consumed by the tuxedo.
Anyone want an urchin

I too use caulerpa, I have feather and the long bladed stuff, I don't remember the names. When I do my water changes I pull some out to keep it where I want it. It went sexual one time when I didn't pull enough out but I didn't hurt anything. I just changed the carbon in the canister filter and the water cleared with in a couple hours.
It really helps keep down the hair algae. I also have a tuxido unchin, He hasn't started eating the macros yet he still has some hair algae to work on.

I also use caulerpa along with cheato and have never had a problem with it, Even if it goes asexual. I have had it happen a few times in the last year and ahalf and never had any bad side effects in the tank or with the seahorses, The tank will turn green and I will go in and remove the algea that looks like it hads lost color and everything just keeps going like normal.
I do prune it out often, but forget to do it sometimes
