You can make one out of PVC pipe, get larger size and drill holes, I have never used them.

you should be fine without one. just keep the heater in an area with flow and keep plenty of other hitching spots for the horses.

I use a visatherm stealth. It has a built-in plastic covering and doesn't get too warm. They hitch on it sometimes, and the snails sit on it for hours. I haven't had any problems. I've seen someone use plastic craft mat to create a barrier around the heater. It's been pretty effective for him. You can buy them at walmart or any craft store. They're pretty cheap. You just size them up to fit and seal the two ends with aquarium sealant.
BTW, I'm new here. Hi guys

ouch! i have seen the same problem on a FW ray but it is rare. if you don't have a cover then you should have really good water flow aroung the heater to keep the body of it cooler.

Actually it was on the back of the tank, where a maxi jet 600 power head was blowing across it to circulate the warmed water. He would just hitch tighter to hold on.

I don't think it is a bad idea , Thats for sure, I have been lucky I guess, I would never want anyone to lose or hurt a horse like that, I may have to make one, Thanks for sharing the picture with us

i'm trying to decide how much LR to put into my tank. I'd like some of my zoanthus and a leather coral in the tank along with the macro algae i've got now. I just don't know how much live rock to use. I've got a large reef tank, so I have the rock. I just don't want to make places that I can't clean with the SH tank. What all have you done?

Why do you need heaters?
I have two large floor fans blowing on my horse tank to keep the temperature as cool as I can.

I was told to keep the tank from any too much fluxuation in the basement to put in a heater and keep it set low, i've got it on 72.

My tank stays between 72 and 74. I keep the heater on 72 to try to keep a constant temp. It rarely kicks on.
