Experience with emerald crabs in a seahorse set-up?????
I noticed some green bubble algae about a month ago. Then I noticed a little more, and a few more after that.....So now it's getting out of hand. I know that emerald crabs eat it. I also know that emerald crabs have big claws. I'm leary of putting one in with my ponies, but I want to do something before it takes over my tank. Anyone have some experience with these things? Are they reef safe?

They are for the most part reef safe, But I don't know if I would trust them with seahorses, Just never really had them in the same tank, They do get pretty big, you will also find alot of times some will eat the algae and some not. I wish I was more help

Thanx Vin. I don't see too many other options. I don't really know what else to do. Pulling out the rock and cleaning it isn't an option at this point. They're all over the tank, and alot of it is at the base, or on the same rock as a coral.

i second that - ultra newbie advise, but as long as you are willing to tear the tank apart to get him out if he nips... I say go for it

I SAW an Emerald Crab drop on a small Maroon Clown and kill him in my tank! Ponies would be easier to catch! DANGER!!!

Make sure that the critter you buy is a true emerald crab. inspect the claws and make sure they are not pointed. Emerald claws have flattened ends whereas imitators will have sharp pointed ends.

I wouldn't recommend it. I've seen an emerald crab jump on and attack a seahorse severely enough that the horse ended up dying.

pull the rock out and scrub the bubble part off then drop the rock in a pot of boiling water for 10-20 seconds. then let it cool in a bucket of clean SW before returning to the tank. that will kill all the spores for you

Most of the rock with the bubble algae has corals attached to it. Boiling corals does not sound like a good idea.....Hence my frustration.
