Here is a question I have often wondered. How many generations does it take for dsh to be considered cb instead of wc? would it be 2 or 3 what do you think or is there more to it?

I believe they're considered captive-bred if the parents (wild or tank-raised) mate in captivity.

Well the little ones are doing good today. The last male we have I do believe he is preg. , he is nice and big. He likes to stay up at the top of yhe water about a inch below because there is a suction cup there to hold one of the trees. Ever since wegot them I think he has always been there. The babys are growing and eat good .

Did taking out the sand have any ill effects on your horses?

Yes we lost accouple babys . Now it is real hard to count them. we also was able to put some snails back in there. They did good yesturday so they should be good this morning. We also was able to see 1 of our snails a Stomatella that came with a rock put its's sperm out but there is only 1 of them that I know of .

he is on my skimmer and if ya loook close you can still see him doing it. The wife had to run to get the camera but before this pic ti looked like a cloud being puffed out ..I have to admit it was neet to see in my tank. I've see pics of in the wild before but not in a tank...Oh yeah this was in the 10gal.

I don,t know anything about enriching brine . We did order some Kent photo plex I think it was called. Is this good to feed or enrich the brine with? I always just fed fresh brine.. Or is there something better?

You may want to look into rotifers as a food source as well. They are very small and are supposed to be nutritious, although I have never tried them myself.

I went in and checked the horses today and they seem to be doing fine. We have 21 babys left and 1 older baby that is 35 days old and 4 adults left. One of the adults is a male and he is preg. again and due sometime after monday. We haven't had any die for accouple of days now, but we did go though a kind of die off for accouple of days. Now we have some snails in there and they are cleaning the tank up and seem to be doing good. I have checked the water since wwe took the sand out and it checks out good. We ordered a hang on filter for it ,It is called a Rapid Flow Filter and it has a ajustable flow rate to it so we will see how that will work too.

Sorry for not being on here. We are down to 6babys and 3 adults now . We had lost a small one this morning. We took the sub out and then the day before yesturday we started treating them with some Methylene Blue in the tank. since it is bare bottom and the male is due any time now , we didn't want to stress him out by moveing him.The baby was about the size of a new born I'm not sure why because they all eat pretty good.I do a water change of 1 to2 gallons aday.I hope I'm doing right.... One day we had lost 4 and I check the water and everything was 0 but the nitrate was 20. We have some posphate and the silica is 0.25 so I guess thats not to bad.

I fresh water dip them and put them in a new tank, bare bottom, hitching post, and a HOB filter with some Biozyme in it . The tank is 2 1|2gal. The male sure didn't like the dip everyone alse seems to be doing aright. There is 1 female who is just standing there by her self with her tail curled but breathing. The filter has a flow regulator so I turned it all the way down and has a crabon filter insert to it. The tank had alittle ammonia to it when I started (.25) but I change a gallon of it and I change some more tonight.

Dang Larry, I am so sorry to hear about all of your losses. I know it has to hurt, especially when everything seemed to be going so good in the beginning. Do you think using the black sand was the main culprit of all this or are you leaning toward something else?

I hope you get it sorted out soon and wish you good luck and success with the horses that you still have.

Well I haven't been on here for afew days so I thought I'd update this thread. We have just 1 pony left and 2 adults ,1 male and 1 female. We haven't lost anymore for about 5 days now. I have them in a 2 1\2gal. tank and change 2 gal. of water a day.I've been enriching the brine once aday and feeding them fresh brine once aday. I put the heater back in and the temp is 78. I'm starting a new filter up because I didn't know if the old one might have been infested with parisites.. I don't know if parisites live with out a host or not. The new filter is in the 5gal. tank working while the horses are in the smaller tank. They are eating good I've been watching them eat. The adult female doesn't eat as good as I'd like her to but she is eating. The pony is 35 days old now, and active.
